Religion notebook: Carillon concert planned at St. John’s

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will present Toru Takao, a freelance carillonneur from Himeji, Japan, today at 7 p.m.

Takao received a bachelor’s degree in carillon studies in the Netherlands and won second prize at the international carillon competition in Tiel, Holland.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnics. They also are invited to tour the cathedral’s labyrinth after the concert.

The cathedral also will present organist Lee Cobb Sunday at 4 p.m. as part of its Second Sunday concert series.

Cobb is organist and choirmaster at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Lake Wales, Fla. He plans to play music by Bach, Buxtehude, Sweelinck, Elgar and Mulet as well as his own compositions.

The cathedral’s labyrinth will be open for self-guided tours starting at 1 p.m.

Outdoor music

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 8441 N. Indian Trail Road, will kick off its annual Concerts in the Park series starting Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

The first performers will be country and rhythm and blues band Emerson.

Audience members should bring their own blankets and chairs for the one- to two-hour concerts.

The Scoops portable ice cream van will sell treats.

Vacation Bible school

Spokane United Methodist Southside Shared Ministries will hold “Galilee by the Sea,” a Vacation Bible School for children Monday through Thursday at three locations from 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Monday’s classes will be at Liberty Park United Methodist Church, 1526 E. 11th Ave.; Tuesday classes will be at Centenary United Methodist Church, 1012 S. Freya; and Wednesday and Thursday classes will be at Central United Methodist Church, 518 W. Third Ave.

Activities will include a biblical village and skits about Jesus.

First Covenant Church, 212 S. Division St., will offer “Sonrise Balloon: Fear Not, Have Faith,” for children 5 years old through the sixth grade from Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Vacation Bible School will feature a demonstration of a hot-air balloon on Wednesday. A light lunch will be served each day.
