White Sox 5-8, Tigers 3-7: At Chicago, Javier Vazquez won his fifth straight decision and Paul Konerko hit a go-ahead homer off Jeremy Bonderman to lead the White Sox over Detroit in the opener of a day-night doubleheader. Bobby Jenks pitched the ninth for his 27th save in 32 chances. In the second game, Carlos Guillen misplayed A.J. Pierzynski’s one-hopper for an error, allowing the go-ahead run to score in the eighth inning as Chicago rallied to complete the sweep.

Athletics 4, Angels 3: At Los Angeles, converted reliever Lenny DiNardo held the Angels to three hits pitching into the seventh inning, Travis Buck had four hits and drove in three runs and Oakland beat the Angels.

Red Sox 1, Indians 0: At Cleveland, Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched seven shutout innings to outduel C.C. Sabathia, denying the Indians’ ace his 14th win, as Boston beat Cleveland. The rookie right-hander allowed just one runner to reach third.

Yankees 9, Royals 4: At Kansas City, Mo., Derek Jeter had four hits, New York batted around in both the first and second innings and the Yankees extended their winning streak to five by beating the Royals.

Blue Jays 7, Twins 0: At Toronto, Vernon Wells drove in four runs, Dustin McGowan won consecutive starts for the first time since early June and the Blue Jays beat Minnesota to match their longest winning streak of the season at four.

Orioles 3, Devil Rays 0: At Baltimore, Daniel Cabrera pitched seven innings of one-hit ball to earn his first win since June 22, and the Orioles beat Tampa Bay. Cabrera walked five and struck out three.
