Betty Hueizenga Schirk
Spokane
Betty Hueizenga Schirk celebrated her 100th birthday Thursday. She was born July 26, 1907, in DuBaug, Ill., and has been a resident of Eastern Washington for 65 years.
She met her husband Joe on a bus route, and they were married in 1948.
Schirk was a custodian at Shadle Park High School for 13 years. She also sold antiques and belt buckles.
She attributes living a long and healthy life to getting a job and sticking to it.
When asked what her most memorable moment in history was, Schirk spoke of living on her grain farm in North Dakota and spending time with her husband on the Oregon coast.
Schirk has two daughters: Elsie Olsen of Alaska and Alvera Olsen of North Dakota; two grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
