SVB championship play next week

Spokane Valley Baseball champions will be determined next week in 6 p.m. games at West Valley High.

Pee Wee Division winners Spokane County Deputy Sheriff’s Assoc. (Summit) and unbeaten Spokane Athletic Supply (Otis Orchards) play Monday.

Unbeaten Midget League regular-season champion Jim Frazier Pro and Trophy Shop (Pasadena Park) will face either Conley’s Place (South Pines) or Trentwood for the title on Tuesday. The two play today, 10 a.m. at South Pines.

Jim Frazier continued its dominance of the Midget League with a 25-2 victory over Spokane Recycling for a 13-0 overall record. The Pasadena team had ended regular season with a 26-1 win over Spokane Valley Electric.

Trevor Cooper was 4-for-5 with four RBIs and Corey Spalding scored three times and drove in three during the win over Valley Electric. Brady Bergman and Carson Driskill combined on a one-hit, 17-strikeout pitching effort.

In the playoff win, Hunter Wells was 3-for-3 scoring four times and driving in four runs. Bergman was 4-for-6 with four RBIs. Wells and Driskill pitched the three-hit, 12-strikeout win.

Conley’s reached the semifinals with a 9-8 win over Sunrise. Pete Chandler had three hits and two RBIs. Miceal Taylor, who also pitched, drove in two runs.

Taylor had 14 strikeouts in two games, including a 9-4 regular season win over Spokane Recycling. Trent Olson had two hits and Reed Simock drove in two runs.

Trentwood beat Inland Cardiology 14-11 to reach the semis.

“In the Pee Wee playoffs, Spokane County Deputy Sheriff’s Assoc. won two games by a run, 11-10 over Mark Spear Homeselling (Chester) and 10-9 over Gibson’s Nursery (South Pines) to reach the finals. Sam Schweiter scored the tying run, and Austin Bliesner stole home with the winner in the seventh inning of its opening victory.

Daniel Dach‘s bases-loaded home run in the second staked the team to a 6-0 lead, and it was 8-0 after four innings before Mark Spear rallied to lead, thanks to a seven-run sixth inning.

In the second win Isaiah Crane went 2-for-3, and Jarrett McLeslie tripled in a run. Summit weathered Gibson’s Nursery’s five-run sixth inning.

Spokane Athletic had 22-6 and 16-2 wins over Hurliman Heating (Ponderosa) and McDonald’s (Skyview).

Both No. 2 Pee Wee divisional finishers were both upset, Pizza Hut and Blasingame Insurance, the latter 6-3 by McDonald’s. Despite the loss, pitchers Gunnar Cebriak and Michael Chan combined or 18 strikeouts, and Chan had three hits, finishing the year with 13 straight.

Two and through

The Spokane Valley Cannons Senior American Legion baseball season ended with a pair of Division 5 tournament losses.

The Cannons were outscored 13-6 by the Blue Devils and 14-9 by the Pullman Patriots in the double-elimination nine-inning games.

Tied 6-6 in the first game after four innings, the Cannons team surrendered seven runs over the next four frames in game one. Justin Marlow, a 2006 West Valley graduate, hit two doubles and Andy Vennum (WV, 2008) added two hits.

Against the Patriots, the Cannons jumped to an 8-2 lead after two innings, but a six-run fourth by the visitors ultimately proved their undoing. Alex Banderas (CV, 2007) had two hits.

“Kimmel Athletic (University), the North Division champion, reached the finals of the American Legion Junior Division 5 tournament, winning its best-of-three series over Spokane Athletic Supply (Central Valley).

Kimmel won the opener 8-2, lost 3-2 in 10 innings in game two, then blanked SAS 8-0 on the four-hit pitching of Jonathan Rapose in the deciding game of the series. Paul Hyndman, who pitched the opening win, also had six hits – two in each of the three games.

Cory Mack had three hits in the SAS win over Kimmel. He and Blake Bledsoe finished with four apiece during the series, Bledsoe with hits in each game.

Kimmel, with a 33-3 record, played North Division foe Newport for the title. Newport beat South champion Freeman in two out of three games to advance to the district final.

Freeman won the opener 9-7, Tyler Ford with four hits, two of them doubles. But the team was beaten 7-3, despite Ford’s two hits and third double, and 8-5, in eight innings after leading 4-1 into the seventh. Abe Mega had three hits and John Hedges two.

All four teams advance to next week’s 16-team state tournament, beginning Thursday at U-Hi and CV fields.
