Portrait wins ChalkArtWalk

Jonathan Rooney of Spokane was recently awarded the Best of Show award at the ChalkArtWalk 2007 for his memorial portrait of friend and hero Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Nicholas Bloem, who died in Iraq on Aug. 3, 2005.

Area residents complete military training

“Four area residents graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Adam Feister graduated from East Valley High School in 2003.

Air Force Airman William Burbank is the son of Benjamin Burbank Jr. of Reardan, Wash., and is a 2006 graduate of Reardan High School.

Air Force Airman Jessica Johnson is the granddaughter of Gaye McCormick of Medical Lake and graduated from Medical Lake High School in 2005.

Air Force Airman Nicolaus Wagner is a 2004 graduate of North Central High School and is the son of Kathy Wagner of Spokane.

Army Pvt. Benjamin Jensen is a 2005 graduate of the Institute for Extended Learning and is the son of Beverly Slater of Spokane.

Army Pvt. Rachelle Kessler is the daughter of Cheryl Bodeau of Otis Orchards and a 2005 graduate of East Valley High School.

Army Pvt. Loren King is the son of Marcus King of Veradale.

Army Reserve Pvt. Clinton Dietel-McLaughl is the son of Greg and Patti Dietel of Lawndale, Calif., and Sue and Mike McCabe of Spokane. He graduated from Rogers High School in 1995.

Army Pvt. Daniel Alexander is the son of Connie Alexander of Elk, Wash.

ROTC posts scholarship winners

“Four area high school students received Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps college scholarships.

Andrew Ambat has graduated from Mt. Spokane High School. He is the son of Albert and Simona Ambat of Spokane.

Michael Lavoie is the son of Brian and Jennifer Lavoie of Fairchild Air Force Base and has graduated from Medical Lake High School.

Joshua Conner also has graduated from Medical Lake High School and is the son of Jodee and Sandra Conner of Medical Lake.

Rex Rieth is the son of Rod and Lori Rieth of Sprague, Wash., and graduated this month at Harrington High School in Harrington, Wash.

ROTC cadet honored

“Army ROTC Cadet Caleb Newbill received the 2007 George C. Marshall ROTC Award at the George C. Marshal Foundation in Lexington, Va., recently. Newbill is the son of Dale Newbill of Otis Orchards and Vicky Newbill of Tukwila, Wash. He graduated in 2003 from Central Valley High School.

WVHS grad gets Air Force promotion

Frank Vassar, a 1987 graduate of West Valley High School, was recently promoted to Air Force major. He is currently stationed in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
