In brief: Mancuso stumbles in World Cup standings

American Julia Mancuso finished fifth at the women’s World Cup Wednesday, failing to reach the podium for only the second time in the last seven downhill races.

The result dropped her further behind Marlies Schild in the race for the overall crown in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. She also trails two other Austrians, Renate Goetschl and Nicole Hosp.

Aksel Lund Svindal won the season’s final men’s World Cup downhill, giving him a big boost in the chase for the overall title.

“Former world champion Bruno Kernen, of Switzerland, crashed, broke his nose, tore knee ligaments and had a concussion in the World Cup downhill. France’s Pierre-Emmanuel Dalcin also crashed and dislocated his shoulder.

Hart has surgery

Michigan running back Mike Hart will miss spring practice because of a medical procedure and wide receiver Adrian Arrington is out for unspecified reasons.

Michigan coach Lloyd Carr called Hart’s surgery a “minor arthroscopic procedure.”

“South Carolina recruit quarterback Stephen Garcia applied to enter a counseling and community service program rather than face prosecution for two misdemeanor charges in Columbia, S.C.

Garcia was arrested Feb. 17 on charges of drunkenness and failure to stop for a police officer during an incident outside a club.

“The Cleveland Browns terminated fullback Terrelle Smith’s contract before he was due a roster bonus at the end of the week.

Woods will defend title

Clinton Woods will defend his IBF light-heavyweight title against Julio Gonzalez in Las Vegas on June 23.

“The condition of five-time world champion boxer Johnny Tapia was upgraded to fair as he begins to recover from an apparent cocaine overdose in Albuquerque, N.M.

U.S. wins Algarve Cup

The United States women’s soccer team won the Algarve Cup for the fifth time, beating Denmark 2-0 on goals by Kristine Lilly and Carli Lloyd in Vila Real De Santo, Antonio, Portugal.

“Former Brandon Wheat Kings owner Bob Cornell was named the Western Hockey League’s Governors Award recipient.

“The Chicago City Council voted overwhelmingly (45-5) to back the city’s 2016 Olympics bid with a guarantee that would put city taxpayers on the hook for up to $500 million if the Olympic Games’ operating budget lost money.

“Former NASCAR chairman Bill France Jr. was hospitalized at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., where he was under the care of his personal physicians.

“Farrell W. Jones, a longtime thoroughbred trainer who won dozens of training titles, died Monday at a care facility near his ranch in Hemet, Calif., his son Gary said. He was 84.

“Duquesne women’s basketball coach Dan Durkin resigned.
