The Spokesman-Review

Spokane police arrested a man Monday night for allegedly raping a woman near First Avenue and Pine Street.

The woman reported that a man sexually assaulted her in an alley after showing a knife about 9 p.m.

The 36-year-old victim was also robbed and cut in the hand as she tried to push the knife away, Spokane police Cpl. Tom Lee said.

She called police from a nearby store, and as police were interviewing her, the suspect rode by on a bicycle.

“She said, ‘That’s him,’ ” Lee said. “She was absolutely positive.”

Anthony Parks, 19, was booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree rape after officers caught him nearby.

The victim was treated and released Monday night from a hospital.

Work to snarl I-90 near downtown today

BNSF Railway Co. will be repairing a bridge over eastbound Interstate 90 from about 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Railroad crews will repair the bridge over the eastbound freeway, which is at the west edge of downtown between the U.S. Highway 195 interchange and the Maple/Walnut interchange, said Al Gilson, a spokesman for the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Eastbound I-90 traffic will be reduced to one lane, and motorists should expect slow or stopped traffic.

Northbound traffic should use extreme caution when entering eastbound I-90, and motorists should watch for flaggers, Gilson said.

Burglary suspect caught with lathe

Deputies arrested a 30-year-old burglary suspect Monday, a Spokane County sheriff’s spokesman said.

Michael Scott Perry, 1411 W. 10th Ave., was booked into the Spokane County Jail on a felony count of second-degree burglary after a Spokane police officer and a sheriff’s deputy said they caught him fleeing with a large metal lathe.

The crime began Saturday when a burglar broke into a garage in the 9800 block of North Fairview, according to a sheriff’s press release.

A burglar had stolen a large quantity of hand tools and other items, said sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Dave Reagan. The victim noticed that the suspect had partially dismantled a large lathe but hadn’t removed it.

The victim set up his own surveillance, and the burglar showed up about 12:30 p.m. Monday and began loading the lathe into his Dodge van, Reagan said.

Spokane Police Officer Terry Preuninger spotted the van on Francis, and he and Deputy Larry Humphreys stopped it. The lathe was clearly visible in the back of the van.
