Rogers names alum Miethe coach

Matt Miethe, who may bleed purple, is the new head football coach at Rogers.

“I’m excited,” Miethe said. “I had my eyes on Rogers from the day I left. It’s a privilege.”

Miethe, 30, was an All-Greater Spokane League lineman as a senior in 1994, the only season in the last 35 that Rogers has had a winning season, and played in the All-State game.

He began coaching at Rogers when a knee injury cut short his senior season at Whitworth. He began teaching physical education and heath at his alma mater after graduating in 2000.

“Hopefully, I can bring it back to at least a respected program,” he said. “We’ve been doing a little kids program in wrestling and seeing it come through. I want to do that for football. And I want to spend some time with our guys and get them committed to wanting to be a football player here.”

Miethe replaces Ted Lyon, who is returning to California after four years as head coach, going 0-9 last fall. Miethe interviewed for the position when Lyon was hired to replace Miethe’s coach, Dave Pomante.

“I got looked over four years ago, which was a good thing. I wasn’t ready,” Miethe said. “It’s time now. My kids are 6 and 4. I’ve got to put some time in to get this program where they’ll want to go here, when my kid’s a sophomore he’ll want to play for dad.

“I’m not going anywhere. I love this place. I can see myself doing it for 20, 25 years and then retiring.”

Miethe also began coaching wrestling while still at Whitworth. He was a state runner-up his senior year. He is a junior varsity softball coach but also spent two years as a head track coach.
