Bayview news: Herb Huseland: Homes going up; marina work stalls

Herb Huseland Correspondent

Development finally has hit Bayview.

“A four- to eight-unit condo – depending on the solution to access problems – is in the planning stages at Hudson Bay Road and state Highway 54.

The property totals approximately 1.2 acres.

The new property owner is John Ragan, a Coeur d’Alene John Deere dealer.

“An eight-acre parcel at Perimeter Road across from Lakeland RV Park is being developed by Viking Homes. Final lot sizes are not set.

“A 14-acre tract is being developed by Dick and Shirley Hansen, longtime residents and owners of the Bitter End Marina. Twenty-two lots just under one-half acre each are planned for the area just above Cape Horn Road.

Son Chris is helping his parents with the development.

“Construction for now is halted at the Harbor View Marina, as permission is still needed from the Idaho Department of Lands to continue development.

Kokanee recovery

Idaho Department of Fish and Game has commercial gill nets on Lake Pend Oreille.

It has been gill-netting trout and mackinaw, trying to lower their numbers so the kokanee have a chance to survive.

This year, even spawners are being netted in the rivers and creeks.

On the lake itself, all is quiet. A few boaters can be seen fishing for anything that is left.

Melo Miaolie is a Fish and Game Department biologist specializing in the kokanee recovery program. Asked whether he thinks the department can bring back the kokanee from near extinction, Miaolie said: “We just don’t know.”

Red-sided shiners, native to British Columbia, seem to be present in huge numbers in the shoal waters of Lake Pend Oreille.

About an inch long just after hatching, these critters will grow to about 7 inches at maturity.

Living mainly in the weedy shallows, they are prime forage for Gerrard trout. Unfortunately, they don’t hang out in deep water as the kokanee do, reducing their value as food for the trophy trout in the lake.

They also compete with other varieties for plankton and insect hatches.
