In brief: Jaguars’ Garrard signs rich contract extension

The Spokesman-Review

Quarterback David Garrard probably could have gotten the Jacksonville Jaguars to pay him more money.

But he was tired of negotiating.

So Garrard ended the contract process Monday, signing a seven-year, $60 million agreement that is the richest in franchise history.

“I pretty much had to say, ‘Let’s go ahead and wrap it up. I’m done,’ ” Garrard said. “It’s too much stress on me and my family. My wife was done five weeks ago. She’s already been on board with everything. We just kept working on it and I finally just said, ‘You know what, I’d rather be happy now, have the city happy now, have the team, the organization, the owner happy now than trying to string something out having everybody on edge.’ “

Garrard and his agent, Albert Irby, had been seeking something similar to the six-year, $67.5 million contract Dallas quarterback Tony Romo signed last season.

But Garrard settled for the latest offer because he “felt like it was time.”

“The New Orleans Saints signed cornerback Aaron Glenn, hoping the 14-year veteran free agent can help shore up a shoddy pass defense.

“The New England Patriots signed free agent Victor Hobson, bolstering their aging linebacker corps.

Gordon leaving Indiana

Indiana freshman Eric Gordon is entering the NBA draft.

While he has not signed with an agent, his father, Eric Gordon Sr., said he intended to sign with one, which would officially end his college eligibility.

The move was expected long before Gordon made the announcement.

When he joined the Hoosiers, many people predicted the 6-foot-4 guard with the nifty moves and NBA 3-point range would go straight to the league after one college season.

He’s projected as a top-10 pick in the June draft.

“Marquette has picked assistant coach Brent “Buzz” Williams to replace Tom Crean, who left last week to become coach at Indiana.

Assistant athletic director Scott Kuykendall said the university scheduled a news conference for today to introduce Williams as the new head coach.

Williams led Marquette’s recruiting efforts as an assistant to Crean last season.

“Miami Hurricanes men’s coach Frank Haith signed a five-year contract through the 2012-13 season, a reward for leading the school to 23 wins and its first berth in the NCAA tournament since 2002.

“At Cincinnati, Xavier point guard Drew Lavender was arrested on Sunday on charges of disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana.
