White Box Pies offers healthy mix
Gluten-free friends, there’s no reason for you to ever feel deprived again.
Here’s another local bakery where you can find treats to eat: White Box Pies.
Yes, pie – and cream puffs. But we’ll get to that in a minute.
Owner Shirley Glodt says the bakery added the gluten-free items to the menu this winter after hearing many requests from customers. There are locations at 415 N. Sullivan Road and 1101 W. Wellesley St.
They make the gluten-free goodies every day, including pie, coffee cakes and cream puffs in a variety of tempting flavors. Some are filled with lemon, custard or whipped cream, and perhaps drizzled with chocolate or caramel.
White Box Pies also can make special orders for people with other allergies. They’re often adjusting recipes for those who can’t eat dairy, eggs or sugar. (“I know. It doesn’t seem right … cream puffs without wheat or dairy? But it can be done,” Glodt says.)

The deadline for entering the contest is next Wednesday. Categories include cakes, icing work, gingerbread houses, cupcakes, petit fours and chocolate, with divisions for adult beginners to masters and separate youth categories. There is a small entry fee.

The chips are up
Put the finishing touches on those healthy nachos recipes. The deadline for the Inland Northwest Ultimate Healthy Nacho Recipe contest is noon on Friday. The original nacho recipes must include two types of cow’s milk cheese and at least one calorie-cutting ingredient.

The winner will receive a $500 gift certificate to Downriver Grill. Second place scores $250 from Saunders Cheese Market and third place is $100 at the Downriver Grill.
