Confectionary show all about presentation
If you’re considering entering a creation in next weekend’s Washington State Sugar Artist cake and confectionary show there’s something you should know. It’s not a baking contest.
Show organizers clarified the details of the contest after several callers said they were confused by an item in last week’s Fresh Sheet and on the Fresh Sheet blog.
According to organizer Angela Heberlein, the show is not a competition in the sense that one person competes against another for the top prize.
Each entry is judged against a set standard to earn points in the competition.
“(Entries) can be anything from a traditional cake to a hand-molded sugar item (i.e. gumpaste or fondant flowers). All the entries are done on dummy or fake cake bases, or just on a decorated display board. The only item the judge looks at is the actual decorating. There are no real baked goods, only display,” Heberlein wrote in an e-mail.
The show will be held April 25 through 27 at the Coeur d’Alene Casino, 27068 S. Highway 95, in Worley, Idaho. There are more details about the demonstrations on this Web site: http://www. freewebs.com/wassacakes/ eventsactivities.htm. It also includes complete contest entry information and forms. The deadline is today.
Demonstrations include everything from poured ganache to hand modeled fondant and gumpaste items. These are free and open to the public on Saturday and Sunday. Almost all of the demonstrators are nationally and internationally known in the cake world, and come from Washington, Oregon and Canada.
Chef Laure’l Silverberg from Arizona, who was formally trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, will teach classes on Friday and give a demonstration on Saturday.
Heberlein said Silverberg has been featured in several magazines, authored a book and made guest appearances on television shows. The class she will be teaching includes work that will be featured in an upcoming article in American Cake Decorating magazine.
