In brief: Woman, daughter killed in Oregon crash

The Spokesman-Review

A Spokane Valley woman and her 12-year-old daughter were killed Sunday in a car accident in Oregon, state police officials said.

The woman’s 10-year-old son, Bailey Fry, also was in the car, though his injuries were not considered life-threatening. He was hospitalized in The Dalles, police said.

Heather Shrum, 33, and her daughter, Lacy Fry, were found dead on Interstate 84 about 11 miles east of Arlington, police said.

Extra counselors were available Monday at North Pines Middle School to help students deal with their schoolmate’s death, said Melanie Rose, Central Valley School District spokeswoman. Bailey Fry attends McDonald Elementary School.

The one-car accident occurred about 4:19 a.m., according to Oregon State Police. Shrum was eastbound in a 2000 Subaru Forester when she veered right onto the gravel shoulder, apparently over-corrected to the left and lost control.

“The Subaru rolled several times on the roadway and down an embankment in the center median area between the eastbound and westbound lanes. The vehicle came to rest on its wheels facing west,” the OSP reported in a news release.

Shrum and her children were wearing seat belts, police said.

Vox needs a few good nominees

The Vox, a monthly newspaper produced by area teens, is looking for suggestions for “Five graduates who will change the world,” a feature story to run in the final Vox edition of the school year.

The story will feature five high school graduates from the Spokane/North Idaho area who promise to improve our world.

We’re not necessarily looking for the college-bound student with the perfect grade-point average. There are a variety of ways – determination, drive, overcoming adversity, helping others, going above and beyond the call of duty – a graduate might change the world.

This isn’t a contest; it’s a story. Please send your suggestions by Friday to Vox adviser Erin Daniels at erind@spokesman.com or 999 W. Riverside Ave., Spokane, WA 99210.

Nominees must be graduating from a Spokane-area high school this year; Vox staff members are ineligible.
