District up next for GSL soccer

A Greater Spokane League soccer season that coaches said would be close ended Friday just as they predicted.

Five teams were separated by three points and four finished with 8-2 records. The final places were determined by shootout outcomes during the season.

Mead and Central Valley (both 8-2 with 25 points) finished tied for first and will play at 7 p.m. Friday at Joe Albi Stadium for the District 8 championship and a guaranteed State 4A berth.

University, Ferris (both 8-2) and Lewis and Clark (7-3) tied for third with 22 points. The fourth-seeded Ferris Saxons and No. 5 LC Tigers play at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Albi, followed by the No. 3 U-Hi Titans and No. 6 Gonzaga Prep (3-7) in loser-out, first-round district play.

The Saxons created the logjams with their 3-1 victory at Mead. They nursed a first-half lead into the final 9 minutes of the match where Ben Antonius knotted the score for Mead. But Ferris got goals a minute apart in the final 6 minutes by James Matern and Taylor Proctor. … At Central Valley, the Bears rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit for a 4-2 win over Mt. Spokane (4-5). Sean Northington and Joseph Guerrinha each scored twice. … U-Hi made six penalty kicks at Hart Field for a 1-0 shootout win over LC that secured third place. Aaron Gleason, the Titans’ seventh shooter, hit the winner. … Rogers (1-9) won 3-2 in overtime over visiting North Central (0-10). Binali Shakirov scored all three goals. … East Valley (6-4) won its sixth straight GSL contest, 2-1 in a shootout over visiting Shadle Park (2-8). Keeper Jordan Bolster made a clutch stop followed by Jon Olson‘s decisive boot. The Knights are the No. 1 seed in next week’s 3A eight-team regional playoffs.

Softball

Central Valley (12-5) scored twice in the sixth inning for a 7-5 victory that completed a season sweep over Mead (12-5). The Bears’ McKenzie Gummersal, who was 3 for 3 and tripled, led off the sixth with a single. Chrystal Holt doubled and Alexa Morales singled for the deciding runs. Mead (12-5) had led 4-0 after two inning, but the teams were tied 5-5 after four. Winning pitcher Alyssa Erickson was 3 for 4, doubling twice. The Panthers’ Katie Kine was also 3 for 4, with a double and triple. … In other games, Lewis and Clark (5-10) scored six times in the first inning of a 7-0 win over visiting Ferris (0-16) at Hart Field. Rachel Head had two hits and scored twice. Tashi Eldore was 2 for 3, scored a run and drove in another. … League-leading Shadle Park (15-0) won its fourth shutout in as many days, 11-0 at home over Gonzaga Prep (5-11). Danielle Lynn was 2 for 3 with a home run, one of four by the Highlanders, and drove in five runs. Sam Skillingstad gave up a first-inning hit and struck out 14. …

North Central (13-3) allowed three seventh-inning runs to visiting Rogers (3-13), but held on for a 7-4 victory. Kim Hare hit a two-run, first-inning triple and Lanea Brown hit a two-run single in the fifth. …

Mt. Spokane (8-9) rallied from a 9-0 deficit at East Valley (3-13) and scored three runs in the eighth for a 12-9 extra-inning triumph. Chelsea Gray and Korinna Baker each had three hits for Mt. Spokane’s Wildcats.
