Ex-Cougar Tobeck selected for PNW hall
Robbie Tobeck, a former Washington State and Seattle Seahawks player, will be inducted into the Pacific Northwest Football Hall of Fame on Wednesday in Seattle.
Tobeck, an offensive guard/center from Tarpon Springs, Fla., who played at WSU in 1991-92, spent 14 seasons in the National Football League, the last seven with the Seahawks. He played in two Super Bowls – one each with the Atlanta Falcons, for whom he played his first seven seasons in the NFL, and the Seahawks – and was selected to the Pro Bowl following the 2005-06 season with Seattle.
He retired after the 2006 season.
Joining him in the PNW Class of 2008 are Phil Borders, a semipro player; Mel McCain, coach; Barry Bullard, University of Washington, and Pat Locker, Western Washington, college players; and Gary Wright of the Seahawks as an associate.
An induction luncheon at noon will be held at the Lake City Elks, 14540 Bothell Way NE. Tickets are $25 in advance, $35 at the door.

Basketball
The Spokane Stars Blue and Northwest Blazers won divisions of the Arizona Elite Spring Classic tournaments in Tempe last weekend.
The Stars, with players from Washington and Idaho, won five games in the 17U Select bracket for high school seniors. Included were a 38-27 win over the El Paso Lady Blazers and a 60-23 victory over the Rocky Mountain Rockers in the final four.
Local players are Kama Griffitts and Carli Rosenthal from Coeur d’Alene, Katelyn Loper from Post Falls and Zoe Scott from University.
The Blazers, with players from Montana, Washington and Minnesota, won the 17U Open bracket for juniors and younger. They were 6-0 in winning a second straight tournament and beat Vegas Elite 51-31 and Colorado Hoopsters Black 41-34 in the final four.
Area Blazers are Jazmine Redmon, Mead; Daisy Burke, Lewis and Clark; and Kellie McCann-Smith, Clarkston.
Other area teams there were North Idaho Elite, which came within a win of the 17U Open semifinals; Stars Red; Sandpipers; and Team Concept.
•Shane Miller from Moscow, Idaho, an all-region selection as a freshman at Treasure Valley Community College last season, will continue his college career at Central Washington, Wildcats men’s coach Greg Sparling announced. Miller averaged 20.3 points a game, eighth in the NWAACC, and was among the league leaders in 3-pointers and free throws.
College scene
Whitworth landed three men and a woman on All-Northwest Conference teams in golf based on their finishes in the conference tournament. Men’s selections were seniors Jordan Carter and Andrew Parrott and junior Connor McCracken. On the women’s team was Krystal Pitkonen, a sophomore from Northwest Christian.
•Elise Otto, a Whitman freshman from Lewis and Clark, and four Whitworth Pirates were named to All-Northwest Conference teams in tennis. Joining Otto on the women’s first team was Whitworth sophomore Rachel Burns. Pirates freshmen Lexy Harrington and Katie Staudinger were on the second team.
The men’s second team included Whitworth sophomore Josh Steele from Spokane, a transfer from Idaho.
•Caitlin McGrane from Colville, a sophomore at Puget Sound, collected a second Northwest Conference track title when she won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.03 seconds at the conference meet last weekend. She earlier had won the heptathlon.
•Nick Atwood, a Montana State sophomore from East Valley, turned in the second-fastest time in the Big Sky Conference this spring in winning the 5,000 meters in 14 minutes, 32.35 seconds at the Azusa Pacific Invitational last weekend.
•Led by sophomore Annie Brophy from Gonzaga Prep, who became the first Notre Dame women’s golfer to win Big East medalist honors outright, the Irish won their third conference title last week in Batavia, Ohio.
Brophy shot three rounds of 2-over-par 74 for a 222 and a two-shot victory. It’s Annie’s first career win.
Her sister, Ellen, a senior at Yale, shot 75-82-75 for 232 and a 12th-place finish in the Ivy League Championships.
•Sophomore centerfielder Katie Antich (Gonzaga Prep) has set the single-season stolen base record for Seattle University with 21 steals in 22 attempts, and is also the career record holder with 36 steals. She is batting .377.
Cycling
Doug Minor of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., won the Expert 50+ Downhill event at the Sea Otter Class in Monterey, Calif., on April 20. Minor, 53, races for Bicycle Butler bicycle shop in Spokane.

Community Colleges of Spokane announced the signings of 17 athletes to letters of intent in eight sports.
Women’s soccer: Olivia Handwerk, Gonzaga Prep; Alexandria Woods, Meridian, Idaho; and Samantha Neinstadt, Ridgefield, Wash.

Track and field
Ellen Rouse, a multiathlete from Orofino, Idaho, is among seven women and two men Idaho co-head coaches Wayne Phipps and Yogi Teevens have announced signing to letters of intent.
Other women are Lindsay Beard, a pole vaulter from Eugene, Ore.; Alyssa Covington, a sprinter/jumper from Borah of Boise; Keli Hall, a sprinter from Lakeview, Ore.; Anna Kalbrener, a distance runner from Gig Harbor, Wash.; Lauren Schaffer, a distance runner from Timberline of Boise; and Teegan Schoch, a distance runner from Kelowna, British Columbia.
Signing with the men are distance runners Alex Brekke of Bozeman, Mont., and James Clark of Maple Ridge, B.C.
Volleyball
Lindsay Nelson, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter from North Central, her school’s most inspirational player and a six-year club player, has signed a scholarship offer to play at Walla Walla Community College, Warriors coach Tim Toon announced.
•Laurie Yearout, a 5-9 All-Greater Spokane League setter for two-time State 4A runner-up Lewis and Clark, has signed to play at Western Washington, Vikings coach Diane Flick announced.
Yearout was a 4A second-team all-state selection.
•VIP Juniors of Spokane finished second to North Central Washington Volleyball Club from the Seattle area in the 35-team 14U Evergreen Regional Championships last weekend at the Valley Hub in Spokane Valley.
North Central earned the right to represent the region in the Junior Olympic national championships in Dallas. VIP is the alternate.
Miscellany
Because the Idaho High School Activities Association requires physicals for all athletes beginning their freshman and junior years, Lake City and Coeur d’Alene will offer exams May 7 at Lake City’s gym, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Cost is $10. Students can preregister by mail or in person at LC. Checks should be made payable to the Lake City High School Athletic Department.
