In brief: Texas sweeps at Penn Relays

Texas cruised to a pair of victories Saturday at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, becoming the third school in 28 years to complete a sweep of the three distance relays.
Texas added wins in the 4-mile and 3,200-meter relays on Saturday to its victory in the distance medley relay on Friday.
Leonel Manzano, a two-time NCAA champion in the mile, led the Longhorns with a strong anchor leg in the 4-mile relay to finish in 16 minutes, 29.5 seconds. The Longhorns followed it up a couple of hours later in the 3,200, winning in 7:23.51.
Any thoughts of Tyson Gay anchoring the United States to a 9-0 record in “USA vs. the World” 400-meter men’s relay went by the wayside when a teammate was poked in the eye, of all things.
Gay’s squad – the same quartet that won the 2007 world championship – wound up only fourth in a race won by Jamaica.

Calipari signs extension
Memphis coach John Calipari signed a contract extension through the 2012-13 season that includes an annual raise of $500,000 and a $5 million bonus if he stays through the end of the contract.
Calipari’s new contract will pay him $2.35 million per year.
Calipari took the Tigers to the national championship game this year, the program’s first Final Four since 1985 and first NCAA final since 1973. Memphis lost 75-68 in overtime to Kansas.
Calipari said the offer was made a month ago, but recruiting and other duties kept him too busy to sign the deal. He said other schools used that against him by implying he was still looking at other jobs.
