WSU rallies past San Jose State

Travis Coulter’s two-run single capped a four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Washington State Cougars beat the San Jose State Spartans 7-5 in non-conference baseball action Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Coulter also had the winning hit Tuesday when the Cougars (22-18) rallied to beat Gonzaga 9-8, snapping a 46-game losing streak when trailing after eight innings.

Reliever Andrew Davis (4-2) picked up the win, while Jack Adams (3-1) was saddled with the loss for the Spartans (23-18).

•Casey Haerther hit a three-run homer to power the UCLA Bruins (21-17, 5-6) to an 8-1 win over the Washington Huskies (25-15, 5-6) in Pac-10 play in Seattle.

•Brian Justice (4-2) allowed two runs and five hits in eight innings to lead the Saint Mary’s Gaels (21-18-1, 5-9) to a 3-2 West Coast Conference win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (24-18, 6-7) in Moraga, Calif.

Evan Wells extended his hitting streak to 15 games for GU.

AJ Proszek (2-4) took the loss in a complete-game effort. He allowed three runs on six hits.

•The Whitman Missionaries (3-35, 1-29) ended a 33-game losing streak by beating the Whitworth Pirates 8-6 in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader in Walla Walla. The Pirates (12-26, 11-19) bounced back to win the second game 7-5.

Whitman had lost all 28 of its conference games this season until the win over Whitworth.

The Pirates’ losing streak reached 12 until winning the second game.

•The fifth inning was unkind twice to the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (15-18, 6-14) in NWAACC play in Walla Walla.

The Warriors (25-12, 13-6) used a five-run fifth in the opener to post an 8-3 victory and a four-run fifth in the nightcap to earn a 4-2 win.

Track and field

Washington State’s James Sadiki and Idaho’s Russ Winger and Elvie Williams were double winners for the men in the Cougar Invitational in Pullman.

Sadiki won the 100-meter dash in 10.86 seconds and the 200 in 22.20. Winger took top honors in the shot put (65 feet, 11 inches, meet record) and the discus (190-0). Williams finished first in the long jump (22-73/4) and the triple jump (46-8).

WSU’s McKenzie Garberg was a double winner on the women’s side. She won the discus (171-9) and the hammer (195-8) – both were regional qualifying marks.

Idaho’s Mykael Bothum set a meet record and outdoor school record in winning the shot put at 51-53/4.

Whitworth’s Liz Mattila broke a school record that stood for 19 years in the women’s 400 with a time 58.98 – topping the mark of 59.14 set by Kris Young in 1989. Emmanual Bofa lopped .27 off his own Whitworth school record in the men’s 800 with a time of 1:50.74.

Chanel James of CC Spokane broke the NWAACC record in the women’s 100 meters that had stood since 1995 by winning in 11.82.

Softball

Jace Williams and Amanda Fleischan each went 2 for 4 with a pair of runs batted in to lead the 22nd-ranked Washington Huskies (26-17-1, 5-8) to a 6-5 win over the 21st-ranked Cal Golden Bears (36-20, 4-10) in Pac-10 play in Berkeley, Calif.

•Josie Ball ripped a bases-loaded triple in the seventh inning to help the Whitworth Pirates (15-20, 12-11) earn a 7-4 Northwest Conference victory over the Pacific Boxers (28-6, 17-5) in Forest Grove, Ore., and gain a doubleheader split.

Miranda McNealy, the 2007 NWC pitcher of the year, fired a one-hitter to lead the Boxers to a 5-0 win in the opener.

•The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (23-13, 15-5) breezed to a 6-1, 10-1 sweep of the Treasure Valley Chukars (14-30, 5-17) in Ontario, Ore.

Ashley Fargher (University High School) had two hits and drove in the go-ahead run in a four-run sixth inning to lead the Sasquatch to a win in the opener. Chantel Booker tossed a complete-game four-hitter to lead CCS to the win in the nightcap.

Tennis

WSU was eliminated from the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif., when the Cal doubles team of Rachael Dillon and Daron Moore beat Aleksandra Stefanova and Aleksandra Cekic, 8-6 in the Invitational division.
