Gonzaga baseball outruns Saint Mary’s Gaels
Jason Chatwood and Drew Heid collected four hits apiece and Grant Kveder drove in five runs to lead the Gonzaga Bulldogs to an 18-5 West Coast Conference baseball victory over the Saint Mary’s Gaels on Sunday at Moraga, Calif.
The Bulldogs (25-18, 6-8) scored five runs each in the sixth and seventh innings and added four more in the ninth to take 2 of 3 games in the weekend series from the Gaels (21-19-1, 5-10).
Reliever CJ McClure pitched three scoreless innings with three strikeouts for Gonzaga.
“At Pullman, the San Jose State Spartans (24-18) scored four times in the fourth inning and went on to claim a 6-2 non-conference victory over Washington State (22-19), ending the Cougars’ three-game winning streak.
“At Seattle, the UCLA Bruins (22-17, 6-6) used a three-run eighth inning to beat the Washington Huskies (25-16, 5-7) 4-3 in Pacific-10 Conference play.
“At Walla Walla, Dan Ramsey drove in three runs and four other Pirates drove in two runs apiece to lead Whitworth to a 15-7 victory over the Whitman Missionaries in the second game of a Northwest League doubleheader.
The Pirates (13-27, 12-20) got six of their 15 hits during a nine-run sixth inning.
In the first game, Erik Korsmo and Micah Babbitt had two hits apiece to lead the Missionaries (4-35, 2-29) to a 3-1 victory.
Softball
Rachel Anderson’s two-run single in the fifth inning gave the Whitworth Pirates a 2-1 victory over the Pacific Boxers in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Forest Grove, Ore.
In the nightcap, Pacific (29-7, 18-6) scored four runs in the fifth inning and went on to a 5-0 victory over the Pirates (16-21, 13-12).
“Three California pitchers held the Washington Huskies (26-18-1, 5-9) to two hits and the Bears collected a 3-1 Pacific-10 Conference victory at Berkeley, Calif.
Valerie Arioto homered and was the winning pitcher for Cal (37-20, 5-10).
