Blue Angels top off Skyfest 2008
Skyfest 2008 is this weekend at Fairchild Air Force Base, with free public admission to events culminating with a performance by the Navy Blue Angels.
The base is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the air show is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the Blue Angels finale starting about 3:10 p.m.

Discount cat licenses offered
The Spokane Spay and Neuter Coalition Mobile Animal Surgical Hospital will be at 620 N. Freya St. Sunday and Aug. 17 to spay, neuter, vaccinate, microchip and license cats for a reduced rate.
Cost for female cats is $35. The cost for male cats is $30. Cats must be at least 8 weeks old and weigh 2 pounds.

Downtown
Open house covers development
The public is being invited to participate in development of an updated downtown plan at an open house session today from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Visitors’ Center at 201 W. Main Ave.
A consultant has been working with city officials, businesses, property owners and residents to expand and refine a plan first written in 1999. The update will include a list of projects to mold the future of downtown, including improvements to the transportation system and public spaces.
West Central
Boone open as work on Maple continues
Boone Avenue at Ash and Maple streets in the West Central Neighborhood is open to east-west traffic as work on Maple between the Spokane River and Northwest Boulevard continues.
The work is part of a $4.2 million project to rebuild Ash and Maple from the river to Northwest Boulevard in two phases this summer. Both phases are included in a 10-year street improvement bond issue approved by voters in 2004.
East Central
Roadwork on Broadway impacts Freya
Freya Street in the vicinity of Alki and Springfield avenues was reduced to one lane in each direction this week as part of a job to realign Broadway Avenue in preparation for construction of a new railroad overpass on Freya in coming seasons.
The $2.1 million Broadway realignment is being funded with federal grants and city funds.
NORth Hill
Free bike tune-ups at Garland Street Fair
Pedals2People will provide free bike tune-ups at the Garland Street Fair. They will be at the intersection of Garland Avenue and Lincoln Street. Children’s bikes will be a priority.
Do-it-yourself shop space is available at the P2P garage Monday and Wednesday nights from 7 to 8:30 pm.
P2Ps mission is to use the bicycle as a tool to empower people and build healthier communities. They also work with other organizations to recycle, reuse and rehabilitate bicycles back into local communities and communities abroad.

Art center offers children’s camp
Corbin Art Center, a program of the City of Spokane Parks and Recreation Department, is offering the Corbin Kids da Vinci Art Camp, for children ages 6-11. The five-day art camp begins Aug. 18 and will run Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pre-registration is required.
Children will study the fine art techniques of Leonardo da Vinci, including drawing, painting, creating invention models and fun mixed media projects.
The cost is $99. Participants are asked to bring their own lunch.

All-glass outdoor show Aug. 16-17
The 15th annual Glass on the Grass, glass-art festival will be held Aug. 16, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Aug. 17, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., on the grounds of Gonzaga University.
The outdoor festival is the only all-glass show in the region,and will feature 40 regional artists demonstrating or showing their work.
The event will include live music, food and wine from local vendors.
The festival is free and open to the public.

Clothing drive benefits teens
Cornerstone Christian Academy, 1801 E. 29th Ave., will host a clothing drive for Teen Closet on Aug. 17, to provide foster kids with new clothes for the upcoming school year. The drive will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Otto, the Spokane Indians mascot, will be on-site from 4 to 5 p.m.
Teen Closet is a donation driven organization that provides new clothing for teens, ages 12-18. Donations of new clothes, accessories, toiletries, gift cards and cash will be accepted. .

Doggie dips in north side pools planned
As the city’s old swimming pools close for the last time, parks officials are holding a series of “doggie dips” to let canine friends have a swim before the pools are torn out for construction of new ones.
Two sessions will be held at each of four pools. The first is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for small- and medium-sized dogs and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. for large dogs. All animals must be leashed, and owners must bring proof of current vaccinations. Only dogs will be allowed in the water during the dips.
Hillyard and Comstock pools will hold doggie dips on Aug. 19. Liberty’s and Witter’s will be on Aug. 26. Cannon Pool had one on Tuesday.
