Bowman goal produces win

CHILLIWACK, British Columbia – The 45th time was the charm for the Spokane Chiefs and the end result was a 1-0 victory over the Chilliwack Bruins in Western Hockey League play at the Prospera Centre on Tuesday night.

Bruins goalie Mark Friesen had turned away every one of the Chiefs’ first 44 shots on goal through 59 minutes, 35.5 seconds of the match.

But Drayson Bowman redirected a Jared Spurgeon shot with 24.5 seconds remaining in the third period and smacked it into the net to give the Chiefs their third straight victory.

Spurgeon and Jared Cowen were credited with assists on the game-winning score.

Dustin Tokarski was untouchable in goal for Spokane (19-9-0-3), although he didn’t have to work as hard as Friesen. Tokarski stopped all 23 shots he faced.

The second-place Chiefs are five points behind front-running Tri-City in the U.S. Division of the Western Conference.

Chilliwack (9-20-2-2) saw its losing streak reach nine.

Spokane was 0 for 3 on the power play, while the Bruins whiffed on five tries with a man advantage.
