Bauhs wins men’s open title; Braden third

Scott Bauhs of Chico, Calif., was the Men’s Open Division winner when USA Track & Field held its National Club Cross Country Championships at Plantes Ferry Park on Saturday.

Bauhs, running for Transports Adidas Racing Team, covered the 10 kilometers in 30 minutes, 47 seconds, which was two seconds faster than runner-up Andrew Carlson of Flagstaff, Ariz.

Carlson led his team, McMillan Elite, to the team title as the first of three top-10 finishers for his team. Brett Gotcher was fourth in 31:05, while Gilliat Ghebray was fifth in 31:07.

Forest Braden, who won seven Idaho state cross country and track and field titles in his prep career at Bonners Ferry before running for Boise State, ran unattached and finished third overall in 31:00, one minute better than his fourth-place finish from a year ago.

Spokane’s Bigfoot Track Club was 14th in the team race and was led by top finisher Mark Curell, who was 48th in 32:45.

In the 6-kilometer women’s race, Rebecca Donaghue of State College, Pa., won individual honors in 21:38, outdistancing Toni Salucci of Chapel Hill, N.C., running unattached, by eight seconds.

Johanna Olson was the top local finisher in 22:43, good for 19th, helping her Spokane Swifts team to an 11th-place team finish.

•Jordan Hasay overcame a huge deficit to win her second Foot Locker Cross Country Championship, beating a field that included three past champions at San Diego. The senior from Mission College Prep in Arroyo Grande, Calif., came from behind in the final 200 meters to pass Allie McLaughlin and defending champion Ashley Brasovan and win the 5-kilometer race in 17 minutes, 22 seconds. She also took the title as a freshman in 2005.

Solomon Haile ran away with the boys’ race, winning in 15:15.

Cody Helbling, a junior at Lake City High School, was 25th in 16 minutes.
