In brief: Gallery featuring artist of month

Avenue West Gallery, 122 S. Monroe St., will feature its January artists of the month at First Night on Wednesday.

The “Scenes on Which to Build Dreams” exhibit will feature Linda Lowry’s European travel photos of old world architecture, pastoral scenes and vignettes of European life, and Cheryl Halverson’s paintings and collages of mountains in Alaska, Idaho, northern British Columbiathe Yukon and Arizona.

The event will be from 5 p.m. to midnight. Refreshments will be served all evening.

Ferris students recycling trees

Ferris High School will hold a Christmas Tree Recycling event on Jan. 3, 4, 10 and 11 to raise funds for its 2009 Senior All-Nighter.

The 2009 Ferris seniors and their parents will accept or pick up trees at the Ferris High west parking lot at the corner of 37th Avenue and Regal Street, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

A minimum $5 donation is suggested for drop off. Pick up service is also available for $15 or $12 for seniors. To arrange pick up service call (509) 999-5186. No artificial trees will be accepted.

Art exhibit big success

The “War on Want” exhibit at Spokane Falls Community College Fine Art Gallery was a success.

More than 250 works of art created by local artists hung on the walls through November. The pieces were donated and bid upon by visitors.

The benefit raised $7,377.00 – $3,688.50 will be going to Volunteers of America and the Union Gospel Mission. “We really appreciate the art community and the Spokane community for their contributions and support,” said artist and gallery director Tom O’Day. “Thank you.”
