Cougars slip to No. 21 in latest poll

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Memphis is still the only unbeaten and still a unanimous No. 1. Washington State, however, slipped four spots after a Pac-10 split last week.

The Tigers (23-0) were a runaway choice at the top of the Associated Press’ men’s poll for a second straight week Monday.

The Cougars dropped from No. 17 to No. 21 after falling to UCLA and beating USC.

Duke, Kansas, Tennessee and North Carolina round out the top five. UCLA dropped from fifth to sixth after losing to Washington.

•Tennessee regained the top spot in the Associated Press women’s poll after former No. 1 Connecticut lost to Rutgers last week. UConn dropped to No. 2, and North Carolina remained in the third spot.

Men

(11) Texas 72, (3) Kansas 69: At Austin, Texas, Damion James scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the second half, and the Longhorns (20-4, 7-2 Big 12 ) held off the Jayhawks (23-2, 8-2).

James finished with 14 points. Connor Atchely led Texas with 16 points and A.J. Abrams added 14 points. Darrell Arthur scored 22 to lead the Jayhawks, and Mario Chalmers added 13 points for Kansas but missed a 3-pointer in the final second that would have sent the game into OT.

(8) Georgetown 55, Villanova 53: At Washington, Jonathan Wallace, fouled in the backcourt by Corey Stokes with one-tenth of a second remaining, sank both free throws to give the Hoyas (20-3, 10-2 Big East) their first home win over the Wildcats (14-9, 4-7) in more than a decade.

Wallace came up with a loose ball in a mad scramble after Scottie Reynolds turned the ball over in traffic while Villanova was holding for the last shot. Wallace – who scored 15 points – started to dribble and was slightly bumped by Stokes, who became the fourth player to foul out in a game that was marred by 48 fouls.

Women

(1) Tennessee 59, (5) Rutgers 58: At Knoxville, Tenn., Nicky Anosike sank two free throws with two-tenths of a second left and the Lady Vols (22-1) rallied to beat the Scarlet Knights (19-4) in a rematch of last season’s national title game.

Candace Parker had 27 points and 10 rebounds, and former University star Angie Bjorklund added 13 for Tennessee. Epiphanny Prince led Rutgers with 21 points.
