Smith, Nuggets dust off Heat in OT

J.R. Smith made a career-best eight 3-pointers and scored 28 points, Kenyon Martin added 24, and the Denver Nuggets edged the Miami Heat 114-113 in overtime Tuesday night.

Carmelo Anthony scored six of his 22 points in overtime for Denver.

Dwyane Wade scored a game-high 29 points, but missed a 22-footer at the buzzer for Miami.

Pistons 94, Hawks 90: At Atlanta, Chauncey Billups scored 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter to rally Detroit over the Hawks.

Rasheed Wallace carried the Pistons in the early going, scoring 15 straight points for his team in the first quarter and finishing with 21.

Boston 104, Indiana 97: At Indianapolis, Paul Pierce had 28 points and 12 rebounds, and short-handed Boston beat Indiana.

Ray Allen scored 23 and Leon Powe added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Celtics, who were playing without injured starters Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins.

Nets 92, Timberwolves 88: At East Rutherford, N.J., Bostjan Nachbar came off the bench in the second half and scored 10 of his 14 points in a decisive spurt to lead New Jersey over Minnesota.

Vince Carter added 17 points and 10 assists and Jason Kidd had nine points, nine assists and 10 rebounds in just missing his 100th triple-double.

Grizzlies 107, Kings 94: At Memphis, Tenn., Hakim Warrick had 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead Memphis over Sacramento.

Rudy Gay added 21 points for the Grizzlies, reserve Juan Carlos Navarro scored 19 and Mike Miller finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Hornets 100, Bulls 86: At Chicago, Chris Paul had 25 points and 14 assists to lead New Orleans over the Bulls.

David West added 27 points for the Hornets.

Andres Nocioni led Chicago with 28 points.

Off the court

Shaquille O’Neal, who is learning a new offense and working his way into shape after a hip injury, is unlikely to play when the Phoenix Suns visit Golden State tonight. After returning from the Bay Area, the team will decide whether O’Neal will play against Dallas on Thursday night in Phoenix. … Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard has a bruised lower back and is questionable for today’s game against Portland. … Portland Trail Blazers 3-point specialist James Jones will be sidelined for three to five weeks because of a sore left knee, the team announced.
