LC boys, U-Hi girls academic champs

Sports teams from six area high schools were named winter academic state champions by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Three were in boys basketball – Lewis and Clark in 4A with a 3.469 grade-point average; Cheney, 2A, 3.579; and Odessa, 1B, 3.620.

In girls basketball, University won in 4A with a 3.750 GPA and Tekoa-Oakesdale in 1B at 3.880.

Riverside won in 2A wrestling with a 3.400 GPA.

Bowling

When Kyle Casey got on a roll, not even the day’s two hottest bowlers could derail him in the Junior Bowlers Tour stop at Fun Spot at Fairchild Air Force Base last Sunday.

Casey knocked off four opponents, capping his run with a 237-198 triumph over top-seeded Nick Schmehl for the championship.

Michael Johnson finished third, Jack Schmehl was fourth and Daniel Seifert fifth. Nick Schmehl put together four-game series of 941 and 933 during the day, and Johnson had a 941. Casey’s run through the roll-offs produced a 926 series.

Nick Schmehl and Johnson matched high games for the boys, 266s. Amanda Oens was high for the girls with a 214.

The next JBT is March 2 in Pullman.

College scene

Robbie Cowgill, a Washington State senior, was named to the ESPN The Magazine District VIII All-Academic first team in men’s basketball with a 3.36 grade-point average in management of operations. He was a second-team choice as a junior

Chad Langlais of Spokane, a freshman on the University of Michigan hockey team, leads the Wolverines’ defensemen in scoring with 16 points, all on assists.

That puts Langlais, who attended Adams Elementary and Chase Middle School before leaving Spokane to further his hockey career, ninth on Michigan’s all-time list for freshmen defensemen.

•Lewis-Clark State volleyball players Brittney Kubik of Ritzville, a senior, and Lisa Davis of Moscow, a sophomore, were Frontier Conference All-Academic selections.

Kubik has a 3.04 GPA in kinesiology. Davis has a 3.85 GPA in psychology.

Golf

The Community College of Spokane’s men’s and women’s teams have announced the signing of area athletes to letters of intent.

Slated to join the men’s team in the fall are Corey Meyers of Deer Park and three from Coeur d’Alene High School, Taylor Porter, Kyler Gable and Tyler Johnson, coach Scott Kramer announced.

Women’s coach Christie Dalsanders announced the signing of Alyssa Osterback of Mt. Spokane and Darby Moberg of Freeman along with Kathleen Nelson of Battle Ground.

Soccer

Three Greater Spokane League athletes have signed letters of intent with the Community Colleges of Spokane men’s team, coach Kenny Krestian announced.

They are Richard Del Medico of Central Valley, Jake Kruger of Shadle Park and Adrian Tarkington of Mead.

CCS women’s coach Jim Martinson signed Claire Pflueger of Wenatchee and Cori Jo Young of Ridgefield.

•The Spokane Shadow Youth Soccer Club, which competes year-round at the premier level, will hold an informational meeting at the Spokane Youth Sports Association Bingo Hall on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to preview its program for prospective families.

Softball

Shelby Bethel, a senior pitcher at University High School, has committed to play at Community Colleges of Spokane, Sasquatch coach Janet Skaife announced.

Bethel had a 7-2 record and 1.63 earned-run average with 89 strikeouts as a junior and was a second-team All-Greater Spokane League selection.

Lauran Nagrone, a catcher at Post Falls, has signed to play at North Idaho College, Cardinals coach Don Don Williams announced.

Nagrone was a first-team All-Inland Empire League selection as a junior after being a second-team choice as a sophomore. She holds school records in home runs, RBIs and batting average.
