Parks to discuss pools, splash pads in series of meetings

Spokane Parks officials are continuing an aggressive push to plan development of new swimming pools and splash pad play areas as part of a $42.9 million voter-approved bond issue.

A dozen meetings on development of new pools, all but one at existing locations, will be held next week and in early April.

Voters overwhelmingly approved a pool and park bond issue last fall, and the park board has asked its staff to get the projects started as soon as possible this year. Pool construction could begin at the end of this summer’s swimming season.

All of the meetings will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and will be led by consultants hired to help the city plan the projects.

Here is the meeting schedule for next week:

Monday at Browne Elementary School, 5102 N. Driscoll Blvd., to discuss a location and design for a new pool in northwest Spokane to replace the former Shadle Park pools.

Tuesday at Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook St., on a new Hillyard Pool at Columbia Avenue and Market Street.

Tuesday at the Southside Senior Activity and Community Center, 3151 E. 27th Ave., to consider a new Comstock Pool. Residents of the Comstock area have asked to preserve the historic building at the east end of the pool.

Wednesday at West Central Community Center, 1603 N. Belt Ave., to discuss Cannon Pool at Maxwell Avenue and Elm Street.

Wednesday at East Central Community Center, 500 S. Stone, to consider Liberty Pool.

Thursday at Stevens Elementary School‘s cafeteria, 1717 E. Sinto Ave., on Witter Pool at Mission Avenue and Upriver Drive.

The meetings will resume in April. Here is the schedule:

April 8 at Shadle Branch Library, 2111 W. Wellesley Ave., on a new northwest pool and at Stevens Elementary School on Witter Pool.

April 9 at Northeast Community Center on Hillyard Pool and at Southside senior center on Comstock Pool.

April 10 at West Central Community Center on Cannon Pool and East Central Community Center on Liberty Pool.
