Area men: Nakamura leads Whitworth to road victory over Willamette

Ross Nakamura scored a career-high 26 points to lead Whitworth to a 72-65 Northwest Conference basketball victory over Willamette at the Cone Fieldhouse Saturday in Salem, Ore.

Nakamura made 8 of 12 shots, including 7 of 10 from the 3-point line and also dished out a game-high seven assists.

Colin Willemsen and Nate Montgomery chipped in 15 points apiece and Ryan Symes added nine points and nine assists for the Pirates (7-3, 1-1), who outscored the Bearcats by six points in the second half.

Mike Smith had 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting and Kyler McClary added 17 points and eight rebounds for Willamette (3-8, 1-1).

“Matthew Dorr scored 25 points on 8-of-8 shooting and Jordan Gregg added 20 points as Community Colleges of Spokane (14-1, 1-0) beat Big Bend 83-70 in both teams’ NWAACC opener in Moses Lake.

Brett Vriesman scored 15 points to lead the Vikings (11-3, 0-1).

“North Idaho built a big first-half lead and cruised to a 73-60 victory over Laramie County on the final day of play at the Donnelley Sports Invitational in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Humberto Perez scored a game-high 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting to lead the Cardinals, who led 44-30 at the half.

David Johnson tossed in 18 points and Kene Anusionwu added 12 for NIC (14-1).

The Golden Eagles (3-11) were led by Greg Jones, who scored 17 points.
