Corvettes displayed at Glass on Grass

The Spokane Corvette Club is holding its annual “Glass on Grass” event Friday through Sunday.

The festivities start on Friday with a gathering from 5 to 9:30 p.m. at Camp Chevrolet, at 101 E. Montgomery Ave. All current and past members are welcome, as well as any other Corvette enthusiasts.

On Saturday, events move to Riverfront Park. Corvette owners can register their cars between 9 and 11:30 a.m. Registration is $40 and allows owners to participate in various events during the weekend. It also offers such benefits as a free T-shirt, a barbecue dinner and entry into contests for door prizes. The cars will be on display at the park between noon and 4 p.m.

On Sunday, there will be racing at Spokane Falls Community College, starting at 9 a.m.

““Last year 154 Corvettes participated in the event,” club historian Jackie Brown said. “It grows every year.”

This year the club is celebrating its 50th year, although this is only the 16th Glass on Grass event. Any money earned beyond the cost of the event will be donated to Washington State University to support prostate cancer research, Brown said.

Rockwood

Neighborhood holdscelebration

Residents in the Rockwood Neighborhood are planning a special celebration on Aug. 5 to commemorate the centennial of the nationally renowned Olmsted Brothers firm that helped design the neighborhood.

A Rockwood Neighborhood Picnic is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Olmsted Triangle Parks with appearances by the mayor and police chief. The event will be held at the southernmost of the parks at 28th Avenue and Garfield and Scott streets.

Hot dogs and music are planned, along with a “bouncy house” for children.

The Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Mass., designed three triangular parks along curves of Garfield as part of the broader layout of Rockwood Neighborhood. About the same time, they submitted a report to the city in 1908 calling for substantial land acquisitions for parks, including today’s large conservation holdings along the Spokane River and Latah Creek.

The Olmsteds today are regarded as visionaries who elevated the quality and status of parks throughout the country, and their legacy in Spokane is being commemorated with a series of events, including the Rockwood picnic.
