In brief: Library food for fines a success

The Spokesman-Review

Patrons at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library exchanged overdue fines for 510 pounds for the Community Action Center Food Bank.

During February the library declared an amnesty on late fees for patrons who donated nonperishable food items for people and pets as part of “Love Your Library – Food For Fines.” The Kootenai Humane Society also received a substantial contribution of dog and cat food.

The amnesty did not apply to library fines for items that were lost or damaged.

More information about the library is available at www.cdalibrary.org or visit the library at 702 E. Front Ave.

Canoes topic of NIC lecture

Nineteenth-century trapper and mapmaker David Thompson’s canoes are the topic of a Thursday presentation at North Idaho College.

Thompson used a variety of watercraft to navigate the Inland Northwest from 1807-1812 and local author Jack Nisbet will discuss how each kind worked and the Native American tribes who made them. Thompson’s trading posts were the foundation of the fur trade in this region.

Nisbet has written two books about Thompson – “The Mapmaker’s Eye: David Thompson on the Columbia Plateau” and “Source of the River: Tracking David Thompson Across Western North America.”

The lecture Thursday starts at 7 p.m. in the Molstead Library at Todd Hall at NIC. Tickets are free, but reservations are encouraged. They can be made by calling 769-3355.

Kootenai County

County plans seminars

Kootenai County Building and Planning Department is offering two opportunities to help applicants achieve successful building permit submittal and plan review. A revised seminar has been prepared, similar to that which was presented two years ago.

The main focus of the presentation will be the process of submittal for a building permit and a review of the “Kootenai County Submittal Requirements and Checklist”. A great deal of effort has been put into creating and refining this document in order to help applicants comply with the Kootenai County building permit submittal requirements. There will also be some discussion about the revised snow load requirements in the jurisdiction of Kootenai County. Other technical topics will be touched on, but again, the primary focus will be on putting together a complete, accurate and successful submittal package.

The first presentation will be held on Tuesday, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. There will be a repeat presentation on March 25, at the same time. Both presentations will be held in the Kootenai County Administration Building, Meeting Room 1A on the lower level, just down the hall from the Building and Planning Department, 451 Government Way in Coeur d’Alene.

A handout package will be provided to those in attendance. Staff will be available afterward for questions.

For more information, call 446-1040.
