Three stars of Ferris’ two-time state champion boys team are among five Greater Spokane League seniors participating in today’s Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (WIBCA) All-State games in Seattle.
The Saxons’ charge is to beat their coach.
The games, presented by Cloud 9 Sports and showcasing the state’s best players, are at Franklin High in Seattle beginning at 2 p.m. with 1B vs. 2B stars, followed by 1A vs. 2A at 4 and 3A vs. 4A at 6.
Saxons Shawn Stockton, the coaches’ selection as State Mr. Basketball, Jared Karstetter and DeAngelo Casto plus Shadle Park’s Zack Humphrey are members of the 4A team. Nick Rijon from North Central is on the 3A team.
The 3A team is coached by Ferris’ Don Van Lierop, the WIBCA 4A coach of the year.
Players in the 1B-2B game include Henry Butler, St. George’s; Ryan Schulz, Reardan; 1B player of the year Austin Mannick, Curlew; Terry Kissler, Sprague-Harrington and Adam Roberts, LaCrosse-Washtucna.
Baseball
North Central scored three runs in the fifth inning to break up a scoreless game and the Indians (2-0) went on to defeat host Lewis and Clark 3-1 in a Greater Spokane League game at Hart Field on Friday. NC’s runs came on a pair of walks, a double by Mike Delvecchio and a single by Evan Witt to back a strong pitching performance by Lucas Woods, who allowed one run in six innings. Sage Poland had three singles for the Tigers (0-2). … Mt. Spokane defeated Rogers 10-2 in the season opener for both teams. The Pirates walked 13 Wildcats batters and four more were hit by pitches. Mt. Spokane ace Nic Fowler struck out nine. … Rain postponed Gonzaga Prep at Central Valley, Shadle Park at Ferris and University at East Valley.
Softball
Chelsea Gray pitched a complete-game two-hitter with seven strikeouts and added an RBI triple and run scored for Mt. Spokane (3-0) as the Wildcats defeated visiting Ferris (0-3) 4-0 in the Greater Spokane League. … Chelsea Vallies struck out 13, had three hits and drove in two runs as North Central defeated visiting Mead 7-3. Kim Hare had two doubles and a single, driving in three runs for the Indians (3-0). Alex Cey hit a solo home run for the Panthers (2-1). … Rain postponed Gonzaga Prep at Lewis and Clark, Central Valley at East Valley and University at Shadle Park.
•In the Inland Empire League, Blake Meredith was in charge for Post Falls as the Trojans defeated Moscow 9-0 in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. The second game was rained out. Meredith, a junior, pitched a complete game, striking out 19 and allowing one hit. Brianne Joseph had four hits, scored two runs and drove in three for PF.
Golf
Mead’s Erik Henderson finished second at the Kennewick Invitational, losing in a playoff to medalist Zach Richardson of Richland after both players shot 68 through 18 holes. Hanford was the team champion and Mead tied for seventh.
