Injured infant dies

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

A 6-month-old girl died Saturday, two days after suffering a brain injury while in the care of her mother’s boyfriend.

Jereme J. Bassett will likely be charged with murder, Spokane police said in a press release late Saturday. The 22-year-old Spokane resident was jailed Friday on charges of first-degree assault.

A doctor who treated Nevaeh Alana Miller told police her injuries could only have been caused by abuse, not an accidental fall as claimed by Bassett, detectives have said.

Bassett declined to be interviewed Saturday at the Spokane County Jail.

The baby was injured about 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the West Wynn Motel, while her mother, identified in court documents as Jennifer Wilcox, was at work. Police have said that after the baby was injured, Bassett and two visitors smoked marijuana and did not call for help.

Wilcox got back to the room from her job about 5 p.m. and quickly summoned emergency help.

The West Wynn’s manager said Saturday that Wilcox had checked out of the motel where she had lived with her infant daughter, her 8-year-old son and Bassett.
