Gonzaga, WSU post victories

Jason Chatwood smacked a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to propel the Gonzaga Bulldogs to a 6-5 victory over the San Francisco Dons (27-21, 9-8) in West Coast Conference play on Saturday at Washington Trust Field.

Cody Martin (4-0) worked 1 2/3 innings in relief of starter AJ Proszek to pick up the win for the Bulldogs (28-19, 8-8), who evened the three-game series at a game apiece.

Proszek didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning. He surrendered three runs – two earned – on four hits in seven innings.

•Michael Weber had a career-high four runs batted in and the Washington State Cougars (23-19, 4-9) romped to a 10-3 victory over No. 23 Oregon State (20-17, 8-8) in Pacific-10 Conference action in Pullman.

Matt Way (3-3) picked up the win. He allowed three runs on seven hits in eight innings.

•Brett Wilcox homered and drove in six runs and Kyle Conley homered twice to lead the Washington Huskies (27-16, 7-7) to a 10-2 victory over the Southern Cal Trojans (21-24, 7-10) in Pac-10 action at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles.

•The Blue Mountain Timberwolves (18-28, 11-15) notched a 2-0, 7-3 doubleheader sweep of the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (17-22, 8-18) in NWAACC play in Pendleton, Ore.

Softball

The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (30-14, 22-6) pounded the Columbia Basin Hawks (15-29, 10-18) in an NWAACC doubleheader in Pasco.

Theresa Tveit (University HS) and Heather Jackson (Shadle Park) each hit home runs in a 14-2 first-game victory. Ashley Fargher (University) went 4 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs to lead the Sasquatch to an 18-4 win in the nightcap.

•Taryne Mowatt fired a complete-game two-hit shutout, striking out 15 along the way to send the 12th-ranked Arizona Wildcats (32-16, 9-8) to a 3-0 win over the 23rd-ranked Washington Huskies (26-20-1, 5-11) in Pac-10 play in Seattle.

The Huskies’ hits were back-to-back singles by Alicia Blake and Bailey Stenson leading off the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Mowatt hit Morgan Stuart with a pitch to load the bases before fanning the next two batters.

Rowing

The third-ranked Washington State Cougars women’s varsity 8 boat breezed to a victory over the 13th-ranked Oregon State Beavers, giving WSU a one-point win in the Wincell Cup at Wawawai Landing near Pullman.

The Cougars finished the 2,000-meter race in 6 minutes, 54.84 seconds – just less than 4 seconds ahead of OSU.

Oregon State won four of six races, but the Cougars won the two that mattered most to post a 67-66 victory.

WSU’s novice 8 won with a time of 7:32.12, just .23 ahead of the Beavers.

•The Gonzaga Bulldogs men advanced two boats – varsity 8+ and novice 8+ – to today’s Grand Finals of the WIRA Championships at Lake Natoma near Sacramento, Calif.

The Bulldogs women advanced all four boats to today’s Grand Finals at the WIRA Championships at Lake Natoma. The Bulldogs, who have won 11 West Coast Conference championships, have a chance to win their third title in four years in the varsity 8 and second varsity 8.
