West Valley wins district baseball title

Anthony Salazar’s two-run double sparked a five-run first inning and West Valley breezed to a 9-1 victory over Clarkston in the District 7 2A baseball title game at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

West Valley (17-4) heads to the state tournament beginning Saturday as the district’s top seed, while Clarkston (15-7) goes as the No. 2 seed.

Also, Pullman (13-7) is headed to state as the No. 3 seed after eliminating Cheney (14-8) 4-0 in a loser-out game at Bailey-Brayton Field. Tyler Druffel went the distance and allowed four hits for the Greyhounds, who scored all their runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Abe Mega’s RBI double in the top of the eighth inning sent Freeman to an 11-10 victory over Lakeside (Nine Mile) in the District 6/7 title game at Shadle Park HS. Steven Burke had a two-run double during Freeman’s seven-run sixth inning. The Scotties head to state as the No. 1 seed. Brandon Herzer drove in five runs for Lakeside, which heads to state as the No. 2 seed. … Chewelah was eliminated after falling 3-2 to Brewster in Wenatchee.

•Prescott-Waitsburg ousted Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia with a 10-9 victory in a District 9 2B loser-out game in Walla Walla. P-W scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on Brian Drannock’s bases-loaded single.

•Colton slipped past Garfield-Palouse 10-9 in the championship game of the District 9 1B tournament in Pasco. Colton earns the top seed to state, while Gar-Pal settles for the second seed. In earlier games, Garfield-Palouse scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally for an 8-5 victory over Touchet. Colton opened with an 11-4 win over Pateros.

Tice Siron, Mark Grubham and Cole Schiermister each drove in a first-inning run and St. Maries cruised to a 5-1 victory over Bonners Ferry in the title game of the District I 3A tournament at Timberlake HS. St. Maries goes to state as the district’s top seed. … Bonners Ferry bounced back and earned the second seed to state with a 6-3 win over Timberlake in a loser-out game. Casey Nelson went 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs for BF.

Softball

Freeman won three straight games to win the District 7 1A title at University HS. The Scotties got a two-run double from Megan Coumont during a three-run fifth inning and held on to beat top-seeded Lakeside 3-1 in the title game. Casey Olson belted a three-run home run as Freeman opened with an 18-6 win over Newport. The Scotties advanced to the title game with a 10-1 win over second-seeded Colfax. Olson struck out 10 in a complete-game effort and Coumont went 4 for 5 with three RBIs. Freeman is state-bound as the top seed, while Lakeside is the No. 2 seed. … Chewelah grabbed the No. 3 seed to state by routing Colfax 11-4 behind Stephanie Huguenin’s grand slam. Colfax will play a pigtail game against the Caribou Trail League’s No. 5 team for a final berth to state. In an earlier game, Chewelah eliminated Kettle Falls with a 3-0 victory.

•Alison Holst tossed a complete-game four-hitter, Emilee Lepp smacked a two-run home run and Natasha Welton added a pinch-hit two-run double to lead Colville to a 7-1 victory over visiting Pullman in a Great Northern League playoff game to decide the top two seeds to the District 7 2A tournament. … In other GNL playoff games, Stephanie Hjortedal singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth and later scored on a wild pitch to lift West Valley to a 2-1 victory over visiting Cheney in a loser-out game. No. 3 seed WV will play at second-seeded Pullman on Tuesday. … Clarkston scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a 7-4 win over Riverside in a loser-out game. No. 4 seed Clarkston travels to top-seeded Colville on Tuesday.

Jessica Hernandez and Elena Hennings each drove in two runs to spark Lind-Ritzville to a 12-6 win over Davenport in the Bi-County League title game in Medical Lake to decide the top two seeds to the District 7 2B tournament. … Also at ML, Angela Bethel doubled and tripled to lead Liberty to an 11-7 win over Reardan in a game to decide the third and fourth seeds to district.

Anne Marie Cain and Maria Villegas each knocked in a run in the seventh inning and Heather Pope tossed a complete-game three-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead Selkirk to a 2-0 victory over Springdale in the title game of the Panorama League tournament to decide the top two seeds to the District 7 2B tournament. Also in the tournament, Mickey Hanks went 3 for 5 with five RBIs to spark Republic to an 18-5 win over St. George’s at Kettle Falls in a game to decide the third and fourth seeds to the district tourney. In earlier games, Selkirk blanked St. George’s 11-0 in five innings and Springdale whipped Republic 15-0 in four innings. In first-round games of the district tourney at Medical Lake on Tuesday, Republic will play Bi-County No. 2 Davenport, while St. George’s will play Bi-County No. 1 Lind-Ritzville. Bi-Country No. 3 Liberty will take on Springdale, while Bi-County No. 4 Reardan will play Selkirk.

Katie Urann surrendered two first-inning runs before slamming the door and allowing St. Michael’s to rally for a 3-2 victory over Columbia in the championship game of the Panorama 1B playoffs at Kettle Falls. Also, Nikki Fry hit a grand slam to spark an 11-run fourth inning and lead Inchelium to a 12-1 win over Cusick in a game to decide the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds to the District 7 1B tournament at Inchelium. Cusick will face Bi-County No. 2 seed Almira/Coulee-Hartline on Tuesday. The winner of that game will play Inchelium. Both Tuesday games are loser-out. … In earlier Panorama playoff games, St. Michael’s pounded Inchelium 16-5 and Columbia doubled up Cusick 8-4.

•Mt. Spokane’s game at North Central for seeding to 3A regionals was postponed and will be played on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Boys soccer

Alex Adams scored a first-half goal and assisted on Mitch Weller’s game-winning goal in the second half as Cheney defeated West Valley 2-1 in the District 7 2A championship game at Whitworth University. Cheney heads to state as the No. 1 seed and will host Othello on Tuesday. West Valley, the No. 2 seed, will travel to play Grandview on Tuesday. … Also at Whitworth, Medical Lake outscored Pullman 4-3 in a shootout to post a 2-1 victory in a loser-out match for the No. 3 seed to state.

Jose Cruz Najera and Josue Hernandez each scored two goals to power Brewster to a 5-0 win over Lakeside (Nine Mile) in the 1A/2B Tri-Districts in Wenatchee. Despite losing Lakeside will open the state tourney at home on Tuesday.

Track and field

Lakeside’s Kayloni Jones is headed to regionals as a girls district champion in three events. Jones won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 25.2 seconds; the 1,600 in 5:31.9; and the 3,200 in 11:59.1 at the Northeast A League district meet at Central Valley HS. Jones’ teammate Gale Nelson was a double winner – winning the girls 100 in 12.60 and the 200 in 26.14. There were two double-event winners in the boys’ half of the meet. Colfax’s Gabe Aeschliman won the 200 in 22.91 and the 400 in 51.69, while Freeman’s Luke Mathews won the long jump at 19 feet, 81/2 inches and the triple jump at 42-4.
