People: She’s ready to ring in the new

The Spokesman-Review

Ellen DeGeneres is wasting no time taking advantage of a California court ruling allowing same-sex marriages.

“I would like to say now, for the first time, I am announcing: I am getting married,” she said on her talk show Friday, as longtime girlfriend Portia de Rossi beamed from the audience.

As the applause died down, DeGeneres cracked: “Thank you. I’ll tell you who the lucky guy is soon.”

Thursday’s ruling by the California Supreme Court means same-sex couples could tie the knot in as little as a month.

However, religious and social conservatives are seeking to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in November that would undo the court ruling and ban gay marriage.

DeGeneres, 50, announced she was a lesbian on the cover of Time magazine in 1997.

A month later, the title character of her then-sitcom, “Ellen,” similarly came out of the closet – the first prime-time lead to do so.

DeGeneres, 50, and actress de Rossi, 35, have been a familiar couple at Hollywood events.

Previously, DeGeneres had a high-profile relationship with actress Anne Heche.

It doesn’t grow on trees

Speaking of Ellen’s ex, a judge has given Anne Heche a temporary break from paying child and spousal support to her former husband and their 6-year-old son.

Heche is off the hook while the court assesses her claims that she can no longer afford the $14,798-a-month payments since her TV series “Men in Trees” was canceled.

Gone to the dogs

One of country music’s most successful teams is breaking up.

Superstar Shania Twain and her producer husband Robert “Mutt” Lange are separating after 14 years of marriage, her label announced.

The couple have been living in Switzerland with their 6-year-old son.

Gray, to Great White Way

Taylor Hicks is going from “Idol” to “Angel.”

The silver-haired Season 5 “American Idol” winner will join the Broadway cast of “Grease” on June 6, playing Teen Angel.

He follows such “Idol” alums as Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”) and also-rans Clay Aiken (“Spamalot”), Diana DeGarmo (“Hairspray”) and Constantine Maroulis (“The Wedding Singer”).

It’s just not fashionable

Glamorous stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Eva Longoria Parker simultaneously are insisting that they’re no slaves to style.

Unlike her “Sex in the City” character Carrie Bradshaw, Sarah says, “I am a mother, wife and working woman in the first place; clothes do not play such a big role in my life.”

And “Desperate Housewives” diva Eva avows that at home, “Usually I’m in sweats or jeans. (Husband) Tony‘s favorite outfit is me in jeans and a T-shirt.”
