WSU’s Anderson wins Pac-10 400 hurdles

Washington State Cougars freshman Jeshua Anderson won the men’s 400-meter hurdles at the Pacific-10 Conference Track and Field Championships on Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.

Anderson finished in 49.55 seconds – .17 in front of Cal’s Jake Hanson.

WSU sophomore Trent Arrivey placed third in the high jump, clearing 7 feet, 1 inch.

Oregon won the men’s team title with 144.5 points. Arizona State was second at 134 and UCLA third at 108. WSU (71.5) was sixth.

Arizona State won the women’s team title with 186.5 points, easily beating runner-up Stanford (117). WSU (73.5) was sixth.

WSU freshman Ebba Jungmark was second in the high jump, clearing 5-111/4. Freshman teammate Anna Layman (Central Valley High) was third in the 800 (2:04.87), while junior Lorraine King was second in the 400 hurdles (58.72).

•Idaho’s Russ Winger won his fifth men’s shot put title at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Boise.

Winger won with a toss of 64-53/4.

The Vandals’ Lucas Pope won his second pole vault title when he cleared a lifetime-best 16-81/4. Teammate Paul Dittmer, who was named WAC freshman of the year, won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.98.

The Vandals women finished second and the men fifth in the team title race.

•Eastern Washington’s Cameron Moore (Ferris High) won the men’s triple jump and Mattie Bridgmon, Curtis Suver and the women’s 4x100-meter relay team all placed second at the Big Sky Conference Championships in Sacramento, Calif.

Moore’s winning leap of 47-81/2 qualified him for the NCAA West Regionals.

Bridgmon finished the women’s 5,000 in 17:30.1, while Suver clocked in at 3:50.93 in the men’s 1,500. Shene Davis, Krystal Deyo, Sarah Frey and Shannon Long ran the 4x100 in 46.93, fourth best in school history.

EWU men placed sixth and the women finished seventh in the team race.

Baseball

Marcus McKimmy went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs to propel the Gonzaga Bulldogs to an 8-7 win over Loyola Marymount in West Coast Conference play in Los Angeles.

The victory gives Gonzaga (30-22, 10-9) its 30th win of the year and marks the first time in 26 years the Bulldogs have posted back-to-back 30-win seasons.

•Tim Murphy singled home Brandon Crawford in the bottom of the 10th inning to send the UCLA Bruins (28-23, 10-10) to a 7-6 win over the Washington State Cougars (28-24, 6-14) in Pac-10 play in Los Angeles.

WSU’s Jim Murphy hit his 14th home run of the season. It was his 33rd career homer, tying him with John Olerud and Jason Grove for fifth place on the school’s all-time list.

•Third-ranked Arizona State (43-9, 14-6) smacked four home runs and rolled to an 11-4 Pac-10 win over Washington (31-19, 10-10) in Tempe, Ariz.

Softball

The Washington Huskies split a pair of games at the NCAA Regional in Houston.

Angel Shamblin fired a complete-game one-hitter to lead the 11th-ranked Houston Cougars (52-9) to a 2-0 victory over the 24th-ranked Huskies in the opener.

Washington (30-24-1) bounced back to beat Texas 5-3 to advance to today’s championship round. UW must beat Houston twice to advance to a Super Regional.

•Community Colleges of Spokane split a pair of games and finished seventh at the NWAACC tournament in Portland.

The Sasquatch nipped Clackamas 1-0 in the first game with the lone run scoring on a sacrifice fly from Ashley Fargher (University HS), before falling to Walla Walla 2-0.
