CdA still alive at state
Coeur d’Alene dropped a 3-0 decision to Rocky Mountain in Friday’s opening round of the Idaho State 5A volleyball tournament in Idaho Falls, but came back to knock off Centennial 3-1 in a losers’ bracket showdown.
Kama Griffitts finished with 10 kills and a block, and Shelby Lobb came up with 26 digs in the win over Centennial, which moved the Vikings (28-4) into a match against Highland.
Lewiston opened with a 3-0 loss to Eagle, and was eliminated by Timberline 3-2.
State 4A: Sandpoint won both of its matches by 3-1 margins, defeating Rigby and then Skyview. For the day, Piper Wahlin had 30 kills and 10 aces, and Linnia Hawkins had 23 assists against Skyview. Sandpoint faces Bonneville today for a championship-round berth.
State 3A: St. Maries was shut out by Fruitland in the first round before defeating Bear Lake 3-2 behind Marlee Masterson’s 19 kills and Michelle Guidry’s 37 assists. That put the Lumberjacks (23-7) up against Intermountain League rival Priest River today. PR (20-9) won its opener 3-1 over Snake River before losing to Sugar-Salem 3-0.
State 1A-Divison I: Lakeside (Plummer) was eliminated in two matches, losing to Raft River 3-1 and Genesee 3-0.
Girls soccer
District 7 1A: Sophomore Katie Baran, in her first match of the season after being cleared to play following back problems, scored a pair of goals to carry visiting Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) to a 2-1 upset victory over Newport. The win moved the Eagles (6-8-1) into a second-round matchup against the No. 3 seed from the Columbia Basin League next Saturday at Lakeside Middle School. The loss eliminated Newport (12-1-0).
