With all the choices new parents face, even the most levelheaded individuals get caught up in consumer frenzy. But today, spending green on going green earns parenting and planet points.

You don’t have to sacrifice style with your eco-conscious choices. As today’s trend in nursery design takes a modern twist, designers are finding ways to blend organic into the scene. Serena & Lily, a children’s linen and housewares company, introduces non-toxic paint to their new collection. From chocolate brown to muted oatmeal, this palette mixes safety and sophistication. Made with low VOCs (volatile organic compounds), “we created a beautiful yet practical space in which children could live and play,” according to co-founder Serena Dugan.

Bursting on the Los Angeles scene is The Little Seed, a children’s specialty boutique that offers one stop eco-friendly shopping for parents. When it comes to going green, no limits exist. From organic cotton clothing to bamboo bedding, making healthy choices for your baby just got easier.

Eco-essentials

Going green means reducing, reusing and recycling. Check out different resources to learn more about little changes that have big results. “It’s about reducing the amount of baby gear you use per child,” says Carolyn Leber of Newark, Calif.-based Orbit Baby. The modular system designed by Orbit Baby reduces this product overload. Allowing for one product to evolve from cradle to car seat to stroller to toddler seat, this line instantly uses less space and recycles itself year after year. Look for products that don’t require constant upgrading.

Babies outgrow their clothing faster than parents can keep them washed and folded. Choosing fabrics like organic hemp or cotton, bamboo or wool not only eliminate toxic chemicals that can irritate the sensitive skin of your newborn, but they last longer with repeated washing.

Hand-Me-Down Chic

Hand-me-downs never sounded more chic than when backed by an eco-friendly cause. The same holds true for bedding. Organic Merino wool and bamboo sheets offer green solutions to traditional synthetic options. And for the founding ladies of The Little Seed, the specialty boutique doubles as a hip, urban oasis for parents with a mission on a mission. Co-founder and actress, Soleil Moon Frye says, “we wanted to create a space where parents had the option to purchase stylish organic or eco products exclusively.”

Going green never sounded so red hot.
