Cougars win home opener

Freshman guard April Cook scored a career-high 20 points to lead a trio of Washington State players in double figures as the Cougars beat Montana State 78-66 in their home opener Sunday.

Cook’s total was the highest for a Washington State player this season. Katie Appleton had 17 points and freshman forward Rosie Tarnowski added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars.

Jenny Heringer topped Montana State (2-2) with 14 points and eight rebounds.

The Cougars led 33-32 at halftime and improved their record to 2-1.

Gonzaga 68, Wyoming 58: At Laramie, Wyo., Heather Bowman scored 28 points as the Bulldogs (5-0) defeated the Cowgirls (2-2).

The Bulldogs raced out to an early lead as the Cowgirls struggled offensively in the first half before making a second-half push.

Courtney Vandersloot added 18 points for the Bulldogs, who led by as much as 16 in the first half and 35-22 at halftime. Bowman and Vandersloot combined for 25 points in the first half.

Kristen Scheffler led the Cowgirls with 21 points, including 12 in the first half.

Gonzaga had a big advantage on the free-throw line, hitting 20 of 24 attempts, to just 9 of 17 for Wyoming, The Cowgirls also turned the ball over 20 times to just six for the Bulldogs.

CC Spokane 69, Shoreline CC 56: Kami Clark had 16 points and seven rebounds and tournament MVP Kelsey Stillar added 14 points as the Sasquatch won the Shoreline Crossover Tournament in Shoreline, Wash. Biana Arellano was named to the all-tournament team.

Washington 74, Boise State 51: Laura McLellan had 15 points and freshman Kristi Kingma added 14 to lead the Huskies to their first win of the season.

McLellan led Washington (1-2) in scoring for the third consecutive game, shooting 5-for-8 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Sami Whitcomb added 11 points and seven steals for the Huskies.

Heather Pilcher had 13 points and four assists for Boise State (2-2).
