Kiffin reportedly will coach Vols

Tennessee has reached a tentative agreement with former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin to lead the Volunteers, a person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press on Friday.

A formal announcement was expected early next week, said the person, who requested anonymity because the deal had not been finalized.

Kiffin, 33, replaces Phillip Fulmer, who was forced out after 17 seasons as Vols coach.

Tennessee athletic department spokeswoman Tiffany Carpenter declined to comment on Kiffin because Fulmer had not finished his season. Athletic director Mike Hamilton did not return a phone message.

Kiffin was the youngest coach in the NFL’s modern history when hired to lead the Raiders in January 2007 at age 31. Kiffin spent seven seasons as an assistant at Southern California under coach Pete Carroll, including two as recruiting and offensive coordinator.

Bellevue team involved in wreck

A charter bus carrying the Bellevue High football team overturned Friday in a four-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 south of Seattle, injuring eight people, the Washington State Patrol said.

State Patrol Trooper Cliff Pratt said seven players and one person from a car received minor injuries and were taken to three hospitals. The worst injury was a minor concussion to one player, he said.

Pratt said an unidentified vehicle lost a ladder on the freeway about eight miles south of Seattle, causing several vehicles to swerve out of the way and slam on the brakes.

The bus, with 38 people on board, collided with a semi-truck and two cars, Pratt said. It overturned, but players and coaches were able to evacuate through emergency exits and windows, he said.

The 12-0 Wolverines were headed to play the 9-3 Capital Cougars of Olympia in the state Class 3A football semifinals at the Tacoma Dome. The game was rescheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood, south of Tacoma.

Iverson apologizes for missing practice

Allen Iverson apologized Friday for skipping a Detroit Pistons practice on Thanksgiving and insisted it won’t happen again.

The standout guard was the only player who didn’t show up for a scheduled workout on Thursday.

“First of all, I have no excuses,” Iverson said after Detroit’s shootaround for its game against the Milwaukee Bucks. “It was a personal matter, but I just handled it the wrong way. I didn’t call and let them know what was going on.”

Coach Michael Curry said Iverson would be hit with a “heavy” fine, and would not start against the Bucks.

Rodney Stuckey (Eastern Washington) started in place of Iverson.
