GU pilgrimage embarks on journey Saturday

Gonzaga University will present its 39th annual Pilgrimage to the Mission of the Sacred Heart in Cataldo, Idaho, on Saturday.

Students, Jesuits, faculty, staff, alumni, family and friends are invited to gather at College Hall Circle on the campus of the school at 7 p.m. and travel to Enaville Resort in North Idaho.

Participants will have breakfast before the 9-mile wilderness hike to the mission. A sack lunch will be provided. Eucharist will be celebrated at the mission.

The bus will arrive back on the Gonzaga campus around 5:30 p.m.

Shofar Factory

Chabad of Spokane will make its own Shofar, a semimusical horn used by Jews on their New Year, also known as Rosh Hashanah which begins at sundown on Sept. 29. The horn is made from a ram’s horn which is cured, measured, sawed, drilled and polished.

In celebration, Chabad of Spokane will hold a Shofar Factory, a hands-on workshop for community members to learn about the Shofar and its history on Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. at 4116 E. 37th Ave. The cost is $15 and the public is invited to attend.

Special service

The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., will present an O-higan service Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The O-higan, or “The Other Shore,” is a time to reflect on awakening to the here and now.

Volunteer opportunities

Catholic Charities Spokane is having a volunteer information session for all of its programs Wednesday from 11:45 to 1 p.m. in the Catholic Pastoral Center, 1023 W. Riverside Ave.

The programs looking for volunteers include Bernadette Place, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Catholic Relief Services, Childbirth and Parenting Alone Program, the Christmas Bureau, counseling, the House of Charity, the Parish Social Ministry, Refugee and Immigration Services, the regional offices, Respect Life, St. Anne’s Children and Family Center, St. Margaret’s Shelter, Senior and Family Housing, and Senior Services.

Movie night

Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church, 4449 N. Nevada St., will present the movie, “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” Friday at 7 p.m.

Christian Singles Fellowship will hold its September meeting Saturday at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of North Addison Baptist Church, 6120 N. Addison St.
