G-Prep stops Mt. Spokane in shootout

Manix’s stops keep Bullpups undefeated

Sarah Manix made two stops in a shootout Wednesday and Gonzaga Prep escaped with a 2-1 victory in a Greater Spokane League girls soccer game at Mt. Spokane.

The Bullpups (6-0 overall, 2-0 GSL) took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the game on a goal by Megan Lindsay, but Jessica Porterfield of the Wildcats (3-1, 1-1) sent the game into overtime with the tying goal in the 65th minute.

Lindsay was also one of four Bullpups to connect in the shootout after the scoreless overtime, along with Maddy Scott, Ashley Ames and Erica Hart. Holleigh Bergstrom, Delaney Zalud and Alli Floyd converted shootout kicks for Mt. Spokane.

Elsewhere in the GSL, a feed between defenders from Shayla Weiler found Allison Bertoni, who scored in the 81st minute and gave University (4-3, 1-1) a 1-0 overtime victory over visiting Ferris. Megan Poppe had 13 saves in goal for the Saxons (3-2, 1-1). … Morgan Manchester assisted on every goal as East Valley (3-2, 1-1) posted a 3-0 shutout of visiting Central Valley (2-2, 0-1). Kendell Abbey, Aubree Mercier and Lexi Plumb took care of the scoring for Knights. … Jill Pecka had one goal and two assists as Mead (5-0, 2-0) rolled past North Central 5-0, the visiting Panthers holding a 26-5 advantage in shots over the Indians (2-4, 0-2). … Shadle Park (1-4, 1-1) earned its first win of the season, a 7-0 romp over Rogers (0-2, 0-2) at Albi Stadium behind Kristi Wirtz’s two goals and one assist – all in the first half.

Women’s volleyball

Katie Rossner had 10 kills and 11 digs and Wenatchee Valley College posted a 25-23, 25-19, 25-22 sweep of the Community Colleges of Spokane in an NWAACC match in Wenatchee.

Brynn DeLong’s 11 kills and three aces were tops for CCS, 15-13 overall and 1-2 in East Division play. The Knights are 16-9, 2-1.

Hockey

Chad Trupp had two goals and an assist to propel the Castlegar Rebels to a 5-3 KIJHL victory over the Spokane Braves in Castlegar, British Columbia – moving into a first-place tie with the Braves in the Murdoch Division.

Josh Pitta, Cody Mesick and Ryan Maul all had goals for the Braves, who dropped to 4-2-0. Castlegar improved to 4-1-0.

Trupp’s first goal broke a 1-1 tie with 8:14 left in the second period, but Mesick answered less than a minute later. Keagen Little’s goal on a Trupp assist gave the Rebels the lead for good with 1:36 remaining the period, and Trupp made it a two-goal lead with 13:08 left in the game.
