Hughes replaces Yearout at Lewis and Clark

Lewis and Clark High School has hired from within to fill its head football coaching position.

Assistant Dave Hughes replaces Tom Yearout, who resigned in February after nine years as head coach and 11 as an assistant.

“We felt it was important to hire someone who was familiar with the current program and Dave has a complete understanding of the football culture which has been built at Lewis and Clark,” Principal Shawn Jordan said.

LC compiled a 64-25 record under Yearout and extended to 17 years its record of consecutive winning seasons. The Tigers captured the State 4A championship in 2007.

Baseball

Greater Spokane League: Visiting Ferris scored seven runs in the sixth inning for a 15-4 win over North Central in a run-rule shortened game.

Saxons pitcher Derek Peterson recorded five strikeouts for a complete-game victory. Five Saxons had two hits apiece while Ryan Krustangel led Ferris with three hits and three RBI. Freshman Ben Goodwin scored three runs and Aaron Roberts had a run-scoring double.

Taylor Hustad had two hits for NC.

The Indians led 3-2 before Ferris struck for six runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good.

•The other four GSL games – Central Valley at East Valley, Shadle Park at Mead, Rogers at Mt. Spokane and University at Lewis and Clark – were postponed and will be made up Thursday.
