Sports page has place

The Spokesman-Review

For decades now, I’ve been dismayed to offended by all the fuss made over professional sports.

The No. 1 foam finger-waving fans; the fortunes paid by consumers for advertising the products they buy so someone else can drive a BMW; and the dearth of attention paid to serious social problems because of the mind-numbed obsession promoted on the populace by these “testfests” are just a few of my objections. For in the grand cosmic scheme of events, sports mean absolutely nothing.

At least up to now, I’ve had no use for them. I generally pull the sports section out of the paper, along with all the other non-news sections, and lament the unnecessary death of trees as I read what’s left.

But as Earth Day approaches, I’ve found a use for the sports pages that helps the environment. I now use them as a coaster for my morning cup of coffee – thereby saving at least one napkin a day.
