Upper-class eyesores ugly too

The Spokesman-Review

As a 90-year-old and 76-year resident of Spokane, I say amen to Steve McNutt (member of Spokane Park Board) and his letter of March 31 concerning the editorial March 29, “Scrutinize Y deal.”

During my youth I remember walking across the Monroe Street Bridge and looking downriver at the north shore. Cardboard and tarpaper shacks littered the river’s edge. Smoke from wood fires was evident.

Years later, these homeless people were forced to leave the area. What is the difference between an eyesore of cardboard shacks and a high-rise, both ruining the beauty of the Spokane River? You might compare homeless persons polluting the river to high-rise fat cats doing the same.

If we allow one high-rise at the Y area, the precedent is set for the next one. When would it end? Let’s keep our gift of the Spokane River as pristine as possible for now and the future.
