Two people suspected of stealing from customers at a Spokane Valley gym used a stolen credit card to buy groceries an hour after the crime, and police are hoping someone recognizes them from a surveillance photo.

The thieves stole the credit card from an unlocked locker at Oz Fitness between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. March 30, then bought food, diapers and baby wipes at the Albertsons at Trent Avenue and Argonne Road about 10:50 p.m.

At least 10 similar thefts have occurred at Oz Fitness, Global Fitness, Gold’s Gym and the Valley Spokane Club in recent weeks, according to Spokane police.

Anyone with information on the suspects is asked to call Crime Check at (509) 456-2233.

LYNNWOOD, Wash.

Mom arrested in boy’s death

Police have arrested a mother for investigation of second-degree manslaughter after the death of her 1-year-old boy who was left alone in her car for seven hours while she worked.

Lynnwood police spokeswoman Shannon Sessions said the 21-year-old mother from Everett was arrested and booked into the City Jail on Monday night. Sessions said she has been released.

Sessions said an autopsy was conducted by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office on Tuesday to determine the cause of death. Sessions said the case will be forwarded to county prosecutors once the investigation is completed.

According to Sessions, the baby was left in a car seat from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday, when the mother returned to the car and found him unresponsive.

The mother brought the baby inside to the Sunrise Assisted Living facility, where the mother worked, and someone called 911. Lynnwood firefighters determined the child was dead.

The mother has not been identified.

Memorial set for slain kids

A memorial service has been scheduled for five children who authorities say were shot and killed by their father at their home in Graham, Wash.

The children’s great-aunt Candy Johnson said the service is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Orting High School in the Pierce County community of Orting. She said the service is open to the public.

Maxine, Jayme, Samantha, Heather and James Harrison have been remembered as bright, polite, loving children. They ranged in age from 7 to 16, and all attended schools in the Orting School District.

Authorities believe their 34-year-old father, James Harrison, shot each child multiple times early Saturday after learning that his wife was planning to leave him. He later killed himself miles away in Auburn.

Penguins take up new home

A new colony of Humboldt penguins waddled into their new home at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo and took their first dip in the pool.

The 20 endangered penguins from zoos in San Diego, New York and Chicago ventured outdoors for the first time Tuesday since arriving here two weeks ago.

The zoo exhibit opens to the public May 2.

The penguin’s new 17,000-square-foot home replicates the desert coast of Peru where the largest colony of wild Humboldt penguins are found. Unlike their snow-dwelling cousins, these penguins live in rocky mainland shores.

The animals are in Seattle as part of a program to help the species form a new breeding colony.
