Gonzaga golfers make All-WCC

Two Gonzaga sophomores and a junior were named to the All-West Coast Conference golf teams.

Junior Derek Cheney and sophomore Kyle Huus became the first Bulldogs named to the men’s team after they tied for fifth in the conference tournament, the highest finish for a GU golfer. That led the Bulldogs to fifth place, again the highest finish in school history.

Sophomore Rachel Sibbitt was selected for the women’s team after tying for second in the WCC Championships earlier this week.

It was the highest finish in school history, which landed Sibbitt the fourth all-league honor for the GU women.

Basketball

Corey Stern, a 6-foot-7 forward out of Rainier Beach High in Seattle, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Idaho.

Stern averaged 13 points, 12 rebounds and 4.5 blocks as a senior. He tied a record with 10 blocks in Rainier Beach’s opening game of the State 3A tournament and led the tournament in rebounding at 13.3.

The Vandals women also added a player, 5-8 guard Natasha Helsham out of Aiea, Hawaii.

The four-time first-team all-conference selection averaged 13.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.9 steals as a senior.
