Tour will show site of proposed controlled burn

From Staff Reports

The Bureau of Land Management will host a public field tour of the proposed Mineral Ridge controlled burn from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Burning 55 acres along the popular hiking trail and picnic area will help restore the ponderosa pine forest and protect adjoining landowners, agency officials said. The field tour includes presentations by a fire ecologist and a forestry expert.

The proposed low-intensity under-burn would mimic what was once a natural occurrence on the landscape, reducing hazardous fuels while hardening the large diameter ponderosa pine and Douglas fir trees.

The Mineral Ridge trail is 11 miles east of Coeur d’Alene. From Interstate 90, take the Wolf Lodge Bay exit and head south on Highway 97 for three miles.

Participants should meet at the Mineral Ridge Picnic Area and dress appropriately for the weather.
