Gray ties bareback record

Rodeo: Bareback rider Ryan Gray from Cheney tied the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) record for the event with a 94-point score last Friday at the Eagle County Fair & Rodeo in Eagle, Colo.

Gray rode Carr Pro Rodeo’s Grass Dancer to the record during a thunderstorm.

“Obviously, the goal is always to make your best ride on the best horse, and when it happens, it’s pretty amazing,” Gray was quoted in a PRCA press release. “I knew I had a great horse, one of the best out there.”

It was the third 94-pointer in PRCA history, joining Wes Stevenson (2002) and Will Lowe (2003).

“It was pouring rain, and it was every man for himself,” Gray said. “It was kind of hectic (with the storm), but it’s kind of fun when that happens, when there is all this outside stuff involved … lightning, thunder and the rain. The crowd didn’t move. They didn’t want to miss anything. It was pretty neat.”

As he always does after a competition ends, Gray texted his wife, Lacy, to let her know how he’d done.

“Only, I’m not so sure she believed me at first, this time,” Gray said. “I’m pretty sure she thought I was messing with her. She knew about that horse, so she knew it was possible, but still …”
