On the verge of new garden

Comstock residents invite participants

The Comstock Neighborhood Council is getting ready to plant a community garden next spring. The garden will be located across from Sacajawea Middle School, near the water tower.

“We are very excited about this, and we’re hoping we can attract a mix of people,” said Erika Steinhart, chair of the Comstock Neighborhood Council. “We hope we can get some gardeners from the Manito neighborhood as well.”

The community garden will have room for 15 to 18 individual garden plots.

“We already have a core organizing group, but we can always use more help,” said Steinhart.

Garden plots are still available.

Before the garden can go in, a fence and raised beds have to be built.

“We are looking for donations for that,” Steinhart said. “We can use volunteer helpers, but also lumber and other materials.”

Pat Munts, a Spokane master gardener, will give classes to new gardeners. Steinhart said she hopes to get some teachers and students from Sacajawea interested in the garden as well.

The plan is to build the beds this fall, and with a little luck, planting can begin in spring.

“I’m not sure how much we can do this fall, but we are trying,” said Steinhart, who was involved in a community garden in Portland. “It’s all about building community and neighbors getting to know one another.”
