Liberty Lake’s Nania makes state bass team

Joey Nania of Liberty Lake has qualified for the BASS Federation Nation state tournament bass fishing team.

Fifty of the state’s best anglers competed for the 12 state team spots. Nania, 18, finished seventh in the overall standings. The season consisted of four one-day fishing tournaments, two on Banks Lake and two on Lake Sammamish.

Nania recently began his adult career after winning five junior state titles and two Junior Bassmaster world championships.

Golf

Washington State’s Nick Grigsby, a senior from Spokane Valley, sot a 14-over 84 in the first round of the U.S. Amateur Championship in Tulsa, Okla.

The second round is today. The top 64 golfers move on to the final rounds; Grigsby is tied for 289th after the first round.

Baseball

Washington State outfielder Kyle Johnson and Gonzaga pitchers Reedy Berg and Liam Baron were named to the All-West Coast League team.

Johnson is a sophomore and played for the Wenatchee AppleSox in the WCL, which is an eight-team wood-batt summer college league. Berg, a junior, was one of five starters named to the team and Baron, also a junior, was the only reliever selected.

Two Spokane RiverHawks were named to the second team: second baseman Sean Winston, a Hawaii Pacific senior, and outfielder Jason Brunansky, a Kansas sophomore.

Rowing

Two University of Washington rowers earned spots in the finals on the second day of the world rowing championships in Poznan, Poland.

Recent UW grad Rob Gibson was part of the Canadian men’s eight that won its heat, and Katelin Snyder coxed the U.S. women’s eight to a heat win. Both earned berths in Sunday’s finals.
